Michael Franti has parted ways with Activist Artist Management following allegations of sexual misconduct

Variety verified the split, with Billboard breaking the news first. The claims were brought to light by singer-songwriter Victoria Canal in an Instagram post on August 11. Canal recounted that at age 19, she was approached online by an older, well-connected man who offered a professional opportunity. She detailed a pattern of unsettling events, such as being touched while asleep and photographed without consent, which escalated over a year. Canal emphasized that the experience began when she was a virgin and had a profound effect on her personal life. She recalled him admitting his actions were intentional, which left a deep emotional impact. She transformed the trauma into her creative work, writing a song titled "Body Behave" and planning an upcoming EP. Situations like these often force a broader conversation about accountability and the structures that enable misconduct. It’s clear that more transparent processes and empathetic responses are needed across industries to address such challenges effectively. Canal added that the severity of what occurred only fully registered after a recent unrelated assault triggered memories of those earlier incidents. Franti issued a statement without directly identifying Canal, in which he acknowledged a consensual extramarital relationship seven years ago with an artist on tour. He affirmed her right to share her perspective but firmly rejected any non-consensual acts. He apologized for being unfaithful to his wife and recognized he should have been more conscious of the power imbalance, considering their age difference and his role as the tour’s headliner. Following his response, the Soulshine at Sea cruise festival, where Franti was scheduled to perform, was canceled. Several artists, including the band Dispatch and Maggie Rose, had already withdrawn from the event, expressing discomfort over the allegations. Canal later shared messages from other women who reported comparable experiences, though not everyone felt prepared to speak openly. She thanked those who offered support and validation, emphasizing how meaningful it was to realize she wasn’t isolated and to feel heard during her recovery. Representatives for Franti and Activist did not respond to requests for comment.
