Brent Hinds, the former lead guitarist of Mastodon, has passed away at the age of 51 following a motorcycle accident in Atlanta on Wednesday

According to the Fulton County medical examiner, Hinds was riding a Harley Davidson when he was struck by a BMW SUV whose driver failed to yield. Hinds co-founded the metal band Mastodon in 2000 alongside bassist Troy Sanders, guitarist Bill Kelliher, and drummer Brann Dailor. He departed from the group earlier this year under circumstances that remain unclear. While the band described it as a mutual decision in a March social media update, Hinds later claimed he was pushed out and referred to his former bandmates as "horrible humans." Such situations highlight the intricate dynamics often present in artistic collaborations, where personal and professional boundaries can become entangled. The music world has seen many partnerships evolve from harmony to discord, yet the work created sometimes endures beyond the friction. On Thursday, Mastodon shared an emotional tribute online, expressing their sorrow and shock. They acknowledged Hinds as a significant creative force and extended sympathies to his family and friends, requesting privacy during this difficult time. Hinds was born in Helena, Alabama in 1974 and relocated to Atlanta in the late 1990s. Before Mastodon, he and Sanders played together in Four Hour Fogger. The band became known for blending grunge, progressive rock, and Southern influences, a style partly shaped by Hinds' experience with banjo. Mastodon released their first album, "Remission," in 2002 on Relapse Records. They later signed with Reprise, a Warner Music label, and put out "Blood Mountain" in 2006. Over their career, they produced eight studio albums, with the most recent, "Hushed and Grim," arriving in 2021. Further updates are expected as details emerge.
