Mariah Carey is set to be honored with the Video Vanguard Award at the 2025 MTV Video Music Awards

She will also take the stage for a performance during the ceremony, which will be broadcast on CBS for the first time on September 7. Organizers have announced that her segment will feature a career-spanning medley of her biggest hits, making it a highlight of the three-hour event. The Vanguard Award has a rich history, often mirroring shifts in the music landscape. Last year, Katy Perry received the same accolade. In recent years, the award has frequently recognized leading female artists, including Shakira, Nicki Minaj, Missy Elliott, Jennifer Lopez, Pink, and Rihanna. The most recent male recipient was Kanye West in 2015. Carey has a new album, "Here for It All," scheduled for release on September 26 through the Gamma label. Her lead single, "Type Dangerous," dropped in June and is up for best R&B at this year’s VMAs. Her upcoming performance marks her return to the VMA stage after two decades, following her last appearance in 2005 to promote "The Emancipation of Mimi." Awards ceremonies often emphasize these symbolic returns, adding layers to the event’s narrative. In a fitting twist, Carey presented the Video Vanguard Award to LL Cool J back in 1997. This year, he will host the show, bringing their connection full circle. Other confirmed performers include Sabrina Carpenter, Ricky Martin—who will receive the inaugural Latin Icon Award—Busta Rhymes, J Balvin, Alex Warren, and Sombr. The VMAs will air live across all time zones on CBS and MTV, with streaming available on Paramount+, starting at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT from New York’s UBS Arena. The 2025 production is managed by Gunpowder & Sky, with Bruce Gillmer, Jesse Ignjatovic, and Barb Bialkowski as executive producers. Alicia Portugal is co-executive producer, Jackie Barba is executive in charge of production, Wendy Plaut oversees celebrity talent, and Lisa Lauricella handles music talent.
