Show moreNicole Kidman Files for Divorce From Keith Urban
People magazine has confirmed that Nicole Kidman has formally initiated divorce proceedings to end her 19-year marriage to country music star Keith Urban. This official legal step comes just one day after the entertainment publication Variety first reported that the high-profile couple had separated.
Their relationship began at a G'Day USA gala held in Los Angeles, leading to a wedding in Sydney, Australia in June 2006. The couple are parents to two daughters, Sunday Rose, 17, and Faith Margaret, 14. For nearly two decades, they presented a united front, with Urban—a four-time Grammy Award winner whose hits like "Somebody Like You" defined modern country-pop—regularly attending Kidman's film premieres, while the Academy Award-winning actress, known for films like "Moulin Rouge!" and "The Hours," was a constant presence at his concerts. They were last seen together publicly in May 2025 at the Academy of Country Music Awards and again in Nashville shortly after.
The marriage endured an early and profound test when Kidman staged an intervention for Urban regarding his alcohol use. Urban subsequently entered a rehabilitation facility and has often credited his wife's unwavering support as the foundation of his recovery and continued sobriety. He emotionally recounted this period during his speech at the 2024 AFI Life Achievement Award ceremony held in Kidman's honor, remembering being in rehab just months after their wedding and unsure of their future. He stated, "if you want to see what love in action really looks like, give that a whirl," praising her for overcoming adversity and choosing love, and describing her nearly two decades later as both "raw, but resilient" and a "complete goofball."
The swift move toward divorce is particularly striking given that the couple publicly celebrated their 19th wedding anniversary in June. Urban commemorated the occasion on Instagram by posting a black-and-white photograph of them in an embrace, accompanied by the caption "Happy Anniversary Baby." This recent display of affection makes the subsequent legal action a stark and poignant turn of events. Dr. Anya Weiss, a relationship psychologist not involved with the couple, observed, "High-profile divorces after long marriages often follow an extended period of private deliberation. The public sees the anniversary posts, but not the difficult conversations happening behind closed doors, which suggests this was a deeply considered, not impulsive, decision." This pattern of a public facade masking private struggles is not uncommon in Hollywood, where image management is a constant pressure.
