‘Beatles’ Movies: James Norton to Play Band’s Manager Brian Epstein

James Norton has been officially cast as Brian Epstein, the legendary manager of The Beatles, in Sam Mendes's ambitious four-part cinematic series, "The Beatles — A Four-Film Cinematic Event." The project, which will present the band's story through the distinct lens of each member, features an all-star lineup: Paul Mescal as Paul McCartney, Harrison Dickinson as John Lennon, Barry Keoghan as Ringo Starr, and Joseph Quinn as George Harrison.

Brian Epstein, often referred to as the "fifth Beatle," first encountered the group in 1961 at Liverpool's Cavern Club—a venue that became synonymous with the Merseybeat sound. He masterminded their transformation from a local Liverpool act into an international sensation, managing them until his tragic death from a drug overdose in 1967 at age 32. According to music historian Dr. Eleanor Vance, "Epstein wasn't just a manager; he was a cultural architect. His complex personal bonds with each member and his shrewd business acumen are central to understanding both their meteoric rise and their internal tensions." Given his profound influence, Epstein is anticipated to appear across all four films.

Sony Pictures has scheduled an unprecedented simultaneous global theatrical release for all four movies in April 2028. The interconnected narratives will chronicle the band's journey from formation in the late 1950s to their breakup in 1970. This multi-perspective approach represents a significant departure from conventional music biopics, aiming to provide a layered and comprehensive look at the group's intricate dynamics.

Other key figures from The Beatles' inner circle will also be portrayed. Saoirse Ronan has been cast as Linda McCartney, while Anna Sawai—acclaimed for her role in "Shogun"—will play Yoko Ono. Aimee Lou Wood, known for her breakout role in "The White Lotus," is in talks to play Pattie Boyd, the celebrated model and photographer who was George Harrison's first wife. Mia McKenna-Bruce will appear as Maureen Starkey, Ringo Starr's first wife. It remains to be seen how essential collaborators like George Martin—the band's innovative producer, also frequently dubbed the "Fifth Beatle"—will be integrated into the sprawling narrative.

For James Norton, 40, this role builds on his recent engagement with music history following his portrayal of record producer Chris Blackwell in the 2024 film "Bob Marley: One Love." Norton’s diverse career includes leading roles in the Netflix limited series "House of Guinness," the long-running crime drama "Grantchester," the critically acclaimed "Happy Valley," and the upcoming third season of HBO's "House of the Dragon." The enduring fascination with Epstein was also evident in the 2024 biopic "Midas Man," underscoring the lasting legacy of the manager who expertly steered the most successful band in history.
