Nipsey Hussle Docuseries Eyed for 2026 as Director One9 Sifts Through Tons of Footage: ‘His Father Videotaped Everything’ (EXCLUSIVE)

A five-to-seven-part documentary series on Grammy-winning rapper and activist Nipsey Hussle is slated for a 2025 premiere, contingent on finalizing distribution. Directed by One9, the tentatively named "Hussle" is complete and will utilize a unique narrative device: posthumous voice-over from Hussle, augmented by commentary from his older brother and business partner, Blacc Sam. This structure aims to provide an intimate, first-person perspective on his journey.

The production benefits from an extraordinary archive, a result of Hussle's own meticulous record-keeping and his father's early filming. "He had the foresight to videotape everything," notes One9, revealing the footage traces his subject's path from a 12-year-old's first studio visit to his emergence as a South Los Angeles icon. The archive also contains unreleased music and segments from a never-published audiobook. Blacc Sam's role has been pivotal, not only in facilitating family cooperation but also in uncovering new dimensions of his brother's life through this material, framing the project as a deep exploration of their partnership. This extensive visual record is rare for an artist of his generation and provides an unparalleled look into his creative and personal evolution.

Nipsey Hussle, born Ermias Asghedom, was tragically killed in 2019 at age 33 outside his Marathon Clothing store in the Crenshaw district, an area he was actively working to economically empower. His death profoundly impacted both his community and the music world, solidifying his legacy beyond his acclaimed album "Victory Lap." The series includes interviews with luminaries like Jay-Z and Kendrick Lamar, alongside childhood friends, to assemble what the director describes as a "very intricate story." The project is a joint effort between Hussle's Marathon Films, LeBron James and Maverick Carter's SpringHill Company, and One9's EverWonder Studio.

Director One9, who launched his career with the celebrated Nas documentary "Time Is Illmatic," specializes in immersive portraits. His recent three-part series "Allen Iv3rson" for Prime Video exemplified his approach, winning the NBA star's trust by committing to an unvarnished depiction. This focus on authentic, disruptive narratives continues in his next work, "The Art of Reinvention," which examines creative resilience through the story of photographer Markus Klinko. For the Hussle documentary, this ethos is paramount. As cultural historian Dr. Alisha Winters notes, "Posthumous documentaries of culturally significant figures carry a heavy responsibility; they must balance celebration with clear-eyed history." One9 has spent years ensuring this series meets that standard, aiming to properly honor an icon whose community legacy makes an accurate portrayal essential.
