Show moreTyler, The Creator to Receive Innovator of the Decade Award at Variety’s Hitmakers Celebration
Tyler, The Creator is set to receive the Innovator of the Decade honor at Variety's upcoming Hitmakers event on December 6. The award acknowledges the rapper and producer's unique, unified artistic approach, which has developed significantly since his start with the groundbreaking hip-hop group Odd Future more than fifteen years ago. Variety's executive music editor, Jem Aswad, cited Tyler's recent critically acclaimed albums "Chromakopia" and "Don’t Tap the Glass," along with his inventive visual productions, TV work, and a forthcoming acting part as proof of his sustained creative output. His achievements in fashion, through his Golf Wang and le FLEUR* labels and high-profile partnerships, are viewed not as a side project but as a fundamental component of his overall brand. This holistic method reflects a broader trend in modern entertainment where artists build multimedia empires, a path successfully charted earlier by figures like Pharrell Williams.
Director Josh Safdie, who recently cast Tyler in the A24 film 'Marty Supreme,' emphasized this integrated perspective. "He represents a rare form of vertical creativity," Safdie observed. "Whether he's composing a track, designing a garment, or developing a character, the same distinctive point of view is present. His timeless aura and director's eye mean he's always generating fresh, valuable ideas during production." This commentary underscores how Tyler's various endeavors feed into and reinforce one another, creating a cultural footprint that extends far beyond the music charts.
The ceremony will celebrate a wide array of contributors to the year in music. Sabrina Carpenter has been named Hitmaker of the Year, while other recipients include emerging star Tate McRae, blues legend Buddy Guy—whose career has influenced generations of guitarists—country artist Megan Moroney, and prolific producer Jack Antonoff. The event will feature presentations from figures such as last year's honoree Laufey, comedian Jake Shane, and famed producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. A special Variety edition will also analyze the year's 25 biggest songs using Billboard and Luminate data, highlighting the often-unsung songwriters, producers, and engineers responsible for them.
Major sponsorship deals highlight the event's industry clout. As a Premier Partner, TikTok will showcase a video installation dedicated to fan-created hits and will produce special episodes of Variety's "Behind the Song" series. Fellow Premier Partner Riot Games, the studio behind the global phenomenon 'League of Legends,' will see its Global Head of Music, Maria Egan, accept the Interactive Music in Media Award. This category recognizes the escalating significance of video game scores and in-game events, such as the popular virtual concerts within 'League of Legends,' which have evolved into crucial platforms for artist exposure and fan engagement. Additional support comes from partners like Cash App, Dos Equis, and Johnnie Walker Black Label.
The gathering is further bolstered by backing from a who's who of music corporations, including Amazon Music, Atlantic and Columbia Records, and the three major music conglomerates: Universal Music Group, Sony Music Entertainment, and Warner Music Group. This consolidated support from across the commercial landscape positions the Hitmakers celebration as an essential annual touchpoint. It serves to honor not only chart-topping success but also the creative visionaries and technological shifts—from social media virality to interactive gaming worlds—that are actively defining the future of the industry.
