The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) has released its annual certifications for 2025, highlighting the albums and singles that reached major commercial benchmarks. Earning the highest honors were Taylor Swift's latest album, "Life of a Showgirl," and Alex Warren's hit single "Ordinary," which led their respective categories.
RIAA Chairman and CEO Mitch Glazier highlighted the significance of these awards, noting they celebrate music that deeply resonated with audiences. "We are excited to wrap 2025 by recognizing the artists and labels behind the year's defining music," Glazier said. Industry experts point out that these certifications, which amalgamate pure sales with streaming data from services like Spotify and Apple Music, offer a crucial snapshot of an artist's market penetration. The RIAA, a trade organization founded in 1952, has continually adapted its certification formulas to reflect evolving consumption habits, from vinyl and cassette tapes to the current streaming-dominated landscape.
On the albums chart, Taylor Swift's "Life of a Showgirl" was the standout, certified for over 5 million units. The only other album to achieve multi-platinum status was Cardi B's "Am I the Drama?". They were followed by a slate of platinum records, including Alex Warren's "You’ll Be Alright, Kid," the Drake and PartyNextDoor joint project "$ome $exy $ongs 4 U," and Lady Gaga's "Mayhem." Also reaching platinum were Sabrina Carpenter's "Man’s Best Friend," Tate McRae's "So Close to What," and the official soundtrack for the popular animated series "KPop Demon Hunters."
For singles, Alex Warren's "Ordinary" led with a triple-platinum award. Two other tracks attained multi-platinum status: the double-platinum "Golden" and Drake's "Nokia." Seventeen additional songs reached platinum, with four of those coming from the "KPop Demon Hunters" soundtrack. The vocalists for the show's fictional group HUNTR/X—EJAE, Audrey Nuna, and Rei Ami—were particularly successful, earning certifications for "Golden," "How It’s Done," and "What It Sounds Like." This underscores the growing influence of animated series and virtual artists in driving mainstream music charts, a trend accelerated by the global reach of streaming platforms.
Drake was named the year's most certified artist overall, with eight certified titles. This included his multi-platinum single "Nokia" and seven tracks from his collaborative album "$ome $exy $ongs 4 U" with PartyNextDoor. This achievement extends his long-running streak of commercial dominance, a position he has held since his 2015 album "If You're Reading This It's Too Late" solidified his streaming era prowess. An industry analyst noted, "Drake's consistent output and strategic collaborations have made him a permanent fixture on the certification lists, demonstrating an unparalleled understanding of the modern music ecosystem."
