Jelly Roll, Sarah Michelle Gellar and Chrissy Teigen Join Netflix’s ‘Star Search’ Reboot as Judges

Netflix has revealed the complete judging panel for its forthcoming live reboot of the iconic talent showcase "Star Search," set to debut on January 20. The series will be hosted by actor and comedian Anthony Anderson, with evaluations provided by a trio of notable figures: Grammy-nominated country musician Jelly Roll, celebrated actress Sarah Michelle Gellar, and model-turned-entrepreneur Chrissy Teigen.

The production will adopt a distinctive five-week, live event structure, with episodes airing on consecutive Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 9 p.m. ET. A key feature is its real-time, worldwide voting mechanism, enabling audiences across the globe to determine weekly outcomes using either their television remote or a companion mobile application. This format marks a significant experiment for Netflix, a platform synonymous with on-demand viewing, as it attempts to cultivate weekly communal viewing events. Media analyst Dr. Lena Shaw observes, "This is a clear play to generate sustained buzz and shared cultural experiences, a tactic that has largely been the domain of traditional broadcast networks." The original "Star Search," which launched in 1983, was itself a pioneer in the televised talent competition genre, helping to launch careers like those of Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake, and Beyoncé.

Spearheading the revival is Jesse Collins Entertainment, the production powerhouse behind spectacles such as the Super Bowl Halftime Show and Netflix's own "Rhythm + Flow." The executive production team includes Jesse Collins, Dionne Harmon, and actress Taraji P. Henson, with Jason Raff and David Friedman serving as showrunners. The updated series aims to find the next wave of multi-disciplinary performers, spanning singers, dancers, comedians, and magicians.

Each judge contributes a unique lens to the panel. Jelly Roll, whose real name is Jason DeFord, brings contemporary music industry credibility; his album "Beautifully Broken" recently achieved a rare simultaneous No. 1 debut on both the Billboard 200 and Top Country Albums charts, underscoring his remarkable crossover from the underground rap scene. Sarah Michelle Gellar, whose career was defined by her iconic portrayal of Buffy Summers on "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," is slated to return to that role in a new series in development at Hulu. Chrissy Teigen offers insights from the worlds of media and commerce, having successfully pivoted from modeling to become a bestselling cookbook author and the founder of the lifestyle empire Cravings. This diverse panel is designed to provide comprehensive feedback for a new generation of aspiring stars.
