Show moreMary J. Blige Extends Partnership With Lifetime for Three New Films, Including ‘Be Happy’ Starring Tisha Campbell and Mekhi Phifer
Mary J. Blige has solidified her role as a major content creator, signing a new pact with Lifetime to executive produce three original movies. The first, "Mary J. Blige Presents Be Happy," will mark the feature directorial debut of actress Gabourey Sidibe, known for her Oscar-nominated role in "Precious." This agreement extends a successful partnership that began with a trio of music-themed films for the network: "Real Love," "Family Affair," and "Strength of a Woman."
Scheduled for a February 7 premiere as part of Lifetime's "Love of a Lifetime" event, "Be Happy" features an ensemble cast including Tisha Campbell, Mekhi Phifer, and Russell Hornsby. The narrative centers on Val (Campbell), a dedicated homemaker who, upon becoming an empty nester, embarks on a journey to reignite passion in her long-term marriage. The film is a co-production between Blige's Blue Butterfly Productions, Monami Productions (founded by reality TV mogul Mona Scott-Young), Motion Entertainment, and Swirl Films.
Blige's history with Lifetime demonstrates her strategic shift from in-front-of-the-camera talent to a behind-the-scenes force. Prior to her music film series, she executive produced the acclaimed 2020 biopic "The Clark Sisters: The First Ladies of Gospel" and appeared as Dr. Betty Shabazz in 2013's "Betty & Coretta." This evolution mirrors a broader trend of artists seeking greater creative control and equity in their projects. Media analyst David Chen notes, "Establishing a production entity is a critical step for longevity in the entertainment industry. It transforms an artist from a hired talent into a stakeholder with the authority to greenlight stories that reflect their vision and community."
Her company, Blue Butterfly Productions, launched in 2019, has been actively building a robust slate. That same year, she entered a first-look television deal with Lionsgate Television, followed by first and second-look agreements with BET in 2022. The BET partnership has already yielded the unscripted talk series "The Wine Down." These multi-network alliances underscore Blige's deliberate strategy to develop a varied content library, ensuring her creative influence extends across both scripted dramas and unscripted formats for years to come.
