Show moreThe Rose Korean Rock Band Documentary to Get Worldwide Theatrical Release From CJ 4DPlex on Valentine’s Day, Trailer Unveiled (EXCLUSIVE)
The documentary "The Rose: Come Back to Me," chronicling the journey of Korean indie-rock band The Rose, will have its global theatrical debut on February 14. Distributor CJ 4DPlex announced the Valentine's Day premiere will launch simultaneously in the United States, Mexico, South Korea, and Germany, with a wider international rollout to follow. A new trailer has been released in conjunction with the announcement.
Helmed by director Eugene Yi—whose previous film "Free Chol Soo Lee" garnered critical praise—the feature traces the group's ascent from busking in Seoul's vibrant Hongdae arts district to their historic performance at California's Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. The band, consisting of members Kim Woo-sung (Sammy), Park Do-joon (Leo), Lee Ha-joon (Dylan), and Lee Tae-gyeom (Jeff), has cultivated a dedicated international following. CJ 4DPlex, a subsidiary of the massive South Korean CJ Group, is leveraging its parent company's global entertainment network for the release. CJ Group's holdings include the CJ CGV theater chain, the fifth-largest in the world, and the powerhouse studio CJ ENM, which produced the Academy Award-winning film "Parasite."
Industry analysts note that the film's festival success signals a growing appetite for music documentaries that delve deeper than concert footage, focusing instead on artistic identity and personal narrative. Following its world premiere at the 2025 Tribeca Festival, where it won an Audience Award and added screenings due to overwhelming demand, "The Rose: Come Back to Me" also attracted full houses at the Busan International Film Festival. Director Yi remarked on the significance of the band's path, stating, "In today's fragmented music landscape, their story—from local stages to a global platform like Coachella—is a testament to the power of authentic artistic vision and fan connection."
In a joint statement, producers Diane Quon—an Oscar-nominated producer for "Minding the Gap"—and Sanjay M. Sharma highlighted the documentary's central theme of music as a source of emotional resilience. They suggested this universal message contributes to its broad appeal. Band vocalist and guitarist Kim Woo-sung echoed this, describing the film as an honest portrayal of the group's challenges and triumphs since their formation in 2017, offering fans an intimate look at their growth.
The project is a co-production between Quonco Productions, Marginal MediaWorks, and HYBE America, the U.S. arm of the entertainment conglomerate HYBE. HYBE is renowned for managing global superstar groups like BTS and LE SSERAFIM, and its involvement underscores the strategic blending of music and film content. By combining CJ 4DPlex's distribution muscle with the mobilized support of The Rose's passionate fanbase, known as Black Roses, the release aims to transform critical festival buzz into a unique worldwide cinematic event on Valentine's Day.
