Show moreTaylor Swift Dances and Dates a Rock in ‘Opalite’ Music Video With Domhnall Gleeson, Greta Lee, Jodie Turner-Smith and More
Taylor Swift has unveiled the official visual for "Opalite," the second single off her blockbuster album 'The Life of a Showgirl.' Departing from conventional pop fare, the video unfolds as a surreal, nostalgic comedy that parodies 1990s infomercials. It promotes a fictional miracle cleaner, also named Opalite, which promises to solve life's problems from friendship woes to workplace strife. Swift's character discovers unexpected companionship with a pet rock, leading to a series of whimsical escapades involving karaoke and handmade bracelets.
The clip is notable for its ensemble of celebrity appearances, all linked by a shared guest spot on a specific October episode of the UK's *The Graham Norton Show*. Greta Lee channels a 90s MTV pop star, Jodie Turner-Smith appears as a fitness guru, and Domhnall Gleeson plays a man in a troubled relationship with his pet cactus. After using the Opalite spray, Gleeson's character magically summons Swift, sparking a quirky romance. Their adventures include a deliberately cheesy mall photo session with Lewis Capaldi as the photographer. Cillian Murphy cameos as a spokesman on a mall advertisement screen, while host Graham Norton serves as the infomercial's overzealous pitchman. *The Graham Norton Show*, a staple of British Friday-night television since 2007, is famous for seating all its guests on a single sofa, often leading to the kind of spontaneous chemistry that inspired this project.
Swift revealed the video originated from a casual backstage joke. In a social media post, she described feeling fortunate to share the talk show stage with a group she admired. "Domhnall offhandedly mentioned he'd like to be in one of my videos. Being Irish, he was clearly just being polite!" Swift wrote. "But instantly, a complete concept formed in my mind." She promptly emailed Gleeson a script featuring him in a lead role, and the idea blossomed into a collaborative "group project" as every guest from that evening agreed to join the 90s-themed endeavor. This approach reflects a broader trend in Swift's recent work, where music videos are treated as cinematic short films with high production value and narrative depth. The video premiered exclusively on Apple Music and Spotify Premium, a strategic rollout consistent with this album era, with a broader YouTube release set for February 8.
"Opalite" has shown impressive chart resilience. It debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and, in its 17th week, continues to hold a Top 10 position. Swift has shared that the track carries personal weight as a favorite of her fiancé, NFL star Travis Kelce. She was captivated by the word 'opalite' upon learning it denotes a manufactured version of the opal gemstone. "Travis' birthstone is opal, so I've always been fascinated by it," she explained. "The notion that it's human-made, and that joy can be similarly constructed, struck me as a compelling metaphor." This personal insight has strengthened fan attachment to the song, contributing to its longevity. As music analyst Clara Shin noted, "For a non-lead single to maintain such altitude for over four months is exceptional. It signals that audiences are engaging with the entire album narrative, not just chasing a viral hook."
The song's performance is a cornerstone of the historic commercial surge driven by 'The Life of a Showgirl.' Released last October, the album moved a staggering 2.7 million copies in its first day. It has since surpassed Adele's "25" to become the most-consumed album in the history of the Billboard 200 chart. The era was initiated by the lead single "The Fate of Ophelia," which became Swift's 13th career No. 1 on the Hot 100 and logged ten non-consecutive weeks at the summit. This sustained dominance across multiple singles is uncommon in the current streaming-driven climate. The elaborate, concept-driven videos, like the one for "Opalite," fortify this phenomenon by transforming each release into an anticipated event, thereby extending the album's cultural relevance well beyond traditional promotional windows.
