New Ennio Morricone Doc to Delve Into Legendary Composer’s Concert Activity (EXCLUSIVE)

A new documentary, "I Never Wrote Music for Films — We All Love Ennio Morricone," will explore the life of the legendary Oscar-winning composer through the unique lens of his longtime manager, Luigi Caiola. The film is based on Caiola's perspective, having produced more than 250 of Morricone's concerts worldwide during his tenure managing the maestro from 1997 to 2015. This project follows Giuseppe Tornatore's acclaimed 2021 documentary "Ennio," which premiered at the Venice Film Festival to widespread acclaim, indicating a sustained public fascination with the composer's legacy.

Ennio Morricone, who passed away in 2020 at the age of 91, remains one of the most revered figures in cinematic history. Beginning his career in 1946, his staggering output included over 500 scores for film and television, alongside more than 100 orchestral works. His iconic soundtracks defined genres, from the spaghetti Westerns of Sergio Leone—such as "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly"—to the poignant melodies of "The Mission" and "Cinema Paradiso." As film historian Dr. Elena Rossi notes, "Morricone's ability to weave emotion into melody transformed film scoring, making the music a character in itself."

The documentary is a co-production between Milan's Marie Mariad Cinema, manager Luigi Caiola, and Chinese producer-filmmaker Yi Zhou. Zhou, known for producing and co-directing "Chronicles of Disney," announced her involvement through her companies Into the Sun Films and Colors of the Sun Ventures. Caiola's deep involvement extends beyond management; he also produced the Grammy-winning tribute album that shares part of the film's title, "We All Love Ennio Morricone," underscoring his personal and professional dedication to the composer's work.

Directed by Italian musicologist Massimo Privitera in collaboration with acclaimed cinematographer Daniele Ciprì, the film is structured into nine distinct chapters. It will blend fictional vignettes, expert commentary, and rare archival material. A key feature will be testimonials from musicians who toured with Morricone for nearly two decades, providing an intimate, behind-the-scenes look at his creative process and personal character. Principal photography is scheduled to commence in summer 2026 across various locations in Italy and Europe.

Post-production and distribution for select international markets will be managed by Colors of the Sun Ventures and its subsidiary, Moon Prism Entertainment. This strategic approach aims to build upon the global appreciation for Morricone's work, ensuring the documentary reaches both dedicated fans and new audiences. By focusing on the personal and professional insights of those closest to him, the film promises to offer a fresh and humanizing portrait of a composer whose music continues to resonate profoundly across the world.
