The documentary "Just Sing," which chronicles the acclaimed SoCal VoCals a cappella group from the University of Southern California, will be released in North American cinemas by Abramorama. The film tracks the ensemble's quest for an unprecedented sixth championship at the International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella (ICCA). Its official qualifying run for the Oscars commences April 24 with dual premieres at New York's QUAD Cinema and the Laemmle NoHo 7 in Los Angeles. This timing strategically coincides with the ICCA Finals, scheduled for April 25 at New York's historic Town Hall—a venue with a storied past hosting political debates and legendary musical acts since its opening in 1921.
To build anticipation, a "Just Sing People’s Premiere" will launch on April 23. This nationwide event, a joint effort by Abramorama, Varsity Vocals, and Theorem Media, will provide 40 on-demand screenings specifically designed to mobilize the dedicated a cappella community. Directed by Angelique Molina and Abraham Troen, the project debuted at the Tribeca Festival and subsequently toured other festivals across the continent. By delving deeply into a passionate subculture, the film employs a proven documentary strategy. Media strategist Claire Finley notes, "Films that genuinely explore niche pursuits often reveal fundamental human struggles and triumphs, allowing them to connect far beyond their immediate subject matter."
The filmmakers bring substantial experience to the project. Co-director Abraham Troen is an acclaimed documentary cinematographer and director, with work for Netflix and the BBC featured at major festivals including TIFF and SXSW. His partner, Angelique Molina, has produced content for HBO and BET; her narrative feature "I'm Fine (Thanks for Asking)" premiered at SXSW in 2021. Troen has stated that the film explores how a cappella, at its heart, demands deep listening and examines what young people can achieve through collective support. Molina added that the production became an investigation into finding one's place, hoping it resonates with anyone who has ever searched for community.
Produced by Ventureland, Mercury Studios, and WIIP, "Just Sing" is characterized by its producers as an inspiring musical journey about growing up and finding one's voice, soundtracked by a diverse range of artists from Bob Dylan to Beyoncé. Abramorama's executives have praised it as exactly the kind of emotionally resonant, character-driven story they seek to distribute. The company has a strong track record with documentaries, such as the recent box office success "The Last Class," which grossed over $1.3 million theatrically, underscoring its commitment to features with powerful human narratives.
This release strategy highlights a wider industry recognition of documentaries' potential for both impact and revenue. By aligning the premiere with the ICCA finals, Abramorama smartly captures the attention of the existing a cappella audience while also capitalizing on the event's heightened publicity. This approach may attract general audiences intrigued by the intense dedication and camaraderie behind a competitive musical phenomenon, offering a natural extension from the spectacle of the competition to the personal stories that fuel it.
