Show moreBillie Eilish in Talks to Make Movie Acting Debut in ‘The Bell Jar’ From ‘Women Talking’ Director Sarah Polley
In a major crossover move, two-time Oscar-winning musician Billie Eilish is poised to headline her first feature film. She will star as Esther Greenwood in a new cinematic adaptation of Sylvia Plath's seminal 1963 novel, "The Bell Jar." The project will be directed and written by acclaimed filmmaker Sarah Polley, who recently won an Academy Award for adapting "Women Talking."
This role signifies a bold expansion for Eilish, a ten-time Grammy winner whose artistic scope has steadily broadened. Her sole prior acting venture was a critically hailed turn in the Amazon series "Swarm," which netted her a People's Choice Award and an Independent Spirit Award nomination. This new challenge follows her work co-directing a concert documentary with James Cameron, underscoring her drive to explore diverse creative mediums beyond her chart-topping music career, which launched with the viral 2015 hit "Ocean Eyes."
Adapting "The Bell Jar" is a notoriously difficult undertaking. The novel, published under a pseudonym weeks before Plath's suicide, is a piercing semi-autobiographical exploration of depression, identity, and societal constraints in 1950s America. Its status as a literary classic demands a sensitive, nuanced approach. Film scholar Dr. Marcus Thorne notes, "Polley's filmography demonstrates a profound empathy for characters in crisis, particularly women. Her work on 'Women Talking' proves she can translate complex internal struggles to the screen without exploitation, which is essential for this material."
The production boasts heavyweight backing. Distribution will be handled by Focus Features, a specialty film arm of NBCUniversal known for award-season contenders. The film is being produced by Joy Gorman Wettels's Joy Coalition, Brad Pitt's Plan B Entertainment—the company behind "12 Years a Slave" and "Moonlight"—and StudioCanal. Veteran producer Gorman Wettels, whose career ranges from the family-friendly "Little House on the Prairie" to the provocative teen drama "13 Reasons Why," was instrumental in packaging the project, securing both Eilish and Polley's involvement early on.
News of the development was first reported by industry publications Deadline and The Insneider. The collaboration merges iconic literary source material with top-tier talent from music and film, generating significant anticipation. This project could set a precedent for other major musical artists taking on serious dramatic roles in prestige adaptations, moving beyond cameos to center-stage performances.
