Show moreTikTok Teams With Apple Music to Allow Users to Stream Full Songs
Apple Music and TikTok have unveiled a joint feature that seamlessly connects viral video clips with complete song playback. The new "Play Full Song" option, announced this week, enables Apple Music subscribers to listen to an entire track without leaving the TikTok app, directly from either the For You feed or a video's Sound Detail page. Discovered songs can be instantly saved to the user's Apple Music library, capturing the immediate impulse of viral discovery. This deep integration aims to shorten the path from a trending snippet to a permanent addition in a listener's collection.
The collaboration also includes a social "Listening Party" tool, allowing groups to stream an artist's music together in real-time while chatting. Initially rolling out with a select group of musicians, the feature is planned to expand to more artists after its initial test period. Both updates are scheduled for a global release in the coming weeks. This move is seen as a strategic play to embed Apple Music into the daily habits of TikTok's vast user base, which exceeds one billion monthly active users. The platform has a proven track record of reviving catalog tracks for new generations; for instance, Fleetwood Mac's 1977 hit "Dreams" saw a massive streaming resurgence in 2020 after a viral TikTok video, demonstrating the app's power as a modern-day hitmaker.
Apple Music's Global Head of Editorial, Ole Obermann, emphasized the goal of a frictionless user experience. "The moment of discovery should be effortless," Obermann noted. "This integration allows that creative spark on TikTok to flow directly into the full listening experience on Apple Music without interruption." He framed the partnership as a critical conduit for artists to convert fleeting viral moments into lasting fan connections. This reflects a wider industry trend where digital platforms are creating interconnected ecosystems to boost user retention, moving away from isolated app experiences.
TikTok's Global Head of Music Business Development, Tracy Gardner, highlighted the platform's role in shaping culture. "TikTok is the real-time engine for music and trend creation," Gardner stated. "Partnering with Apple Music provides a smooth journey from that initial discovery to deeper engagement, including a shared social space to enjoy music." This deal follows TikTok's strategic shift away from its own streaming service, TikTok Music, which was discontinued in November 2024 after tests in markets like Indonesia and Brazil. That retreat signaled a new focus on alliances with established music services rather than direct competition.
This latest integration builds on a 2023 TikTok feature that allowed users to save sounds to external apps like Spotify. The current partnership, however, represents a more significant step by functionally merging the social video environment with a premium streaming service's full catalog. By enabling full playback within TikTok, the collaboration directly addresses a common point of friction in digital music, where users previously had to switch apps. As noted by industry analyst Maria Chen of SoundWave Insights, "This isn't just a link; it's a functional embedding that could redefine the discovery-to-consumption loop, setting a new benchmark for social media and streaming service symbiosis."
