Finneas O’Connell to Score ‘Beef’ Season 2

Finneas O'Connell, the celebrated musician and producer, will create the original score for the upcoming second season of "Beef," the acclaimed anthology series from Netflix and A24. O'Connell, who has won two Academy Awards and eleven Grammys, revealed he has dedicated the past year to this deep immersion in the project. The new season, comprising eight episodes, is scheduled to debut on April 16. This marks a significant expansion of O'Connell's work in visual media, distinct from his foundational role in pop music as the primary collaborator for his sister, Billie Eilish, whose record-breaking albums he has co-written and produced.

The series returns with a completely new story and cast following its massively successful first season, which starred Steven Yeun and Ali Wong and won multiple Emmy Awards. Show creator Lee Sung Jin expressed strong enthusiasm for O'Connell's involvement, citing a long-standing personal connection to the artist's work. "For the last ten years, Finneas's music has essentially been the soundtrack to my life," Jin said. He specifically highlighted O'Connell's "unique gift for transforming profound darkness into something beautifully poignant." O'Connell described his meticulous approach, which involved repeated viewings of every scene to develop a fully original musical landscape that amplifies the show's complex interpersonal drama.

This scoring assignment is part of O'Connell's growing portfolio in film and television composition, which already includes the score for the HBO Max drama "The Fallout," music for B.J. Novak's film "Vengeance," and work on Alfonso Cuarón's Apple TV+ series "Disclaimer." His acclaimed songwriting for films, such as the Oscar-winning "Barbie" ballad "What Was I Made For?," showcases a fluid talent across formats. This move by elite pop producers into scoring is a notable industry shift. Media strategist Dr. Lena Shaw observes, "When a composer like Finneas brings a dedicated fanbase, it creates a synergistic promotional effect, essentially cross-pollinating audiences for high-end television and contemporary music."

Season two boasts a prestigious ensemble cast led by Charles Melton and Cailee Spaeny, who play a couple employed at a high-end country club. Their stable existence fractures after witnessing a tense confrontation between their powerful boss and his wife, roles taken by Oscar Isaac and Carey Mulligan. The cast is further strengthened by Oscar-winner Youn Yuh-jung and revered Korean actor Song Kang-ho, whose iconic performance in Bong Joon-ho's class satire "Parasite" resonates with this season's themes. The narrative will explore the intricate "calculus of obligation and manipulation" within this rarefied setting, a perfect match for the nuanced emotional layers expected from O'Connell's original score.
