Show moreKanye West Found Liable in Malibu Mansion Renovation Trial, but Jury Awards Plaintiff Only a Fraction of Damages Demanded
In a verdict with both wins and losses for each side, a Los Angeles jury determined on Wednesday that the musician Ye must pay former project manager Tony Saxon $140,000 in compensatory damages. The jury, however, dismissed Saxon's claim of wrongful termination and his bid for $1.7 million, preventing any award for punitive damages. While the exact total Ye will owe is not yet public, it is expected to rise significantly once his former manager's legal fees and additional court costs are included.
The trial, which began in late February, centered on Saxon's argument that he was a hired employee who sustained injuries while overseeing renovations at Ye's Malibu property. The proceedings included testimony from Ye himself and his wife, Bianca Censori. Observers noted that Ye appeared disengaged on the stand, frequently responding to questions with "I don't recall." His attorney, Andrew Cherlaskey, later characterized this demeanor to the jury as a sign of disinterest, telling Rolling Stone that his client found the case "beneath him."
Saxon's lawsuit detailed a broken financial agreement, alleging Ye promised him $20,000 per week but delivered only one such payment alongside a separate $100,000 sum for construction. He also claimed the work caused serious neck and back injuries—an assertion the defense countered by presenting video evidence of Saxon singing and dancing energetically at a nightclub. The testimony revealed ambitious and unconventional plans for the coastal estate, a notable architectural landmark originally conceived by Pritzker Prize-winning Japanese architect Tadao Ando, renowned for his masterful use of raw concrete. Saxon stated that Ye intended to gut the structure, eliminate stairs, and cut utilities to live "off the grid," with Censori corroborating ideas like installing a slide in place of a staircase.
Further unusual details emerged, including Saxon's claim that he was compelled to provide 24-hour security during demolition under Ye's orders not to leave the site. He recounted personal interactions, such as Ye giving him a ride when his car broke down. On the stand, Ye said he did not remember these events but acknowledged complaining about Saxon's personal hygiene. This legal setback comes as Ye attempts to rehabilitate his public image following severe fallout from a series of antisemitic remarks in 2022. The controversy led major corporations, most notably Adidas, to terminate partnerships, dissolving his billion-dollar Yeezy brand. A recent full-page apology in The Wall Street Journal is viewed by branding experts as a deliberate, though not guaranteed, opening move in a long-term strategy to regain commercial footing. As one industry analyst noted, "The court of public opinion often moves slower than a court of law, and financial penalties are just one part of the reputational repair equation."
Despite his exile from many mainstream corporate circles, there are tentative indicators of a professional re-emergence. Ye is scheduled to headline an event on April 3 at Los Angeles's SoFi Stadium, a massive, cutting-edge arena that has hosted events like the Super Bowl. Additionally, his repeatedly delayed album "Bully" is finally set for an independent release this month. This dual approach of securing high-profile performance venues while distributing music directly to fans signals a strategic pivot toward operating outside the traditional music industry infrastructure that once supported him.
