Show moreMajority Stake in Tina Turner Catalog Acquired by Pophouse
In a notable shift for music rights ownership, the legendary catalog of the late Tina Turner has a new primary stakeholder. Pophouse Entertainment, the Swedish company established by ABBA's Björn Ulvaeus, has acquired a majority share, entering a co-ownership arrangement with the current rights holder, BMG. The financial specifics of the transaction remain confidential. This move follows BMG's landmark 2021 acquisition of Turner's complete assets—encompassing her solo master recordings, song publishing rights, and the commercial use of her name and image—for a reported $50 million, a deal that was widely viewed as a definitive safeguarding of her artistic estate.
The iconic Tina Turner, who passed away in 2023 at age 83, is celebrated as one of history's top-selling recording artists. Her six-decade career generated timeless hits like "What's Love Got to Do With It" and "The Best," anthems that continue to define her legacy. Her recordings, originally released on Capitol-EMI, are now under the stewardship of Universal Music's Parlophone label. Turner's immense cultural impact is underscored by her rare dual induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame—first with the Ike & Tina Turner Revue and later as a solo performer—and her 12 Grammy Awards, which include a prestigious Lifetime Achievement honor. Her rise from Nutbush, Tennessee, to global fame, dramatically portrayed in the 1993 biopic *What's Love Got to Do With It*, remains a foundational narrative in popular music.
The newly formed partnership between Pophouse, BMG, and the Tina Turner Estate is dedicated to the long-term stewardship and innovative development of her work. Their unified goal is to launch projects that honor her artistic influence, introducing her music to new audiences while satisfying existing fans. This approach mirrors a wider industry pattern where specialized investment entities collaborate with traditional music companies to manage historic catalogs, merging financial resources with curatorial knowledge. As music industry analyst Clara Benson notes, "This type of strategic partnership is becoming increasingly common for iconic catalogs, as it combines financial investment with dedicated legacy management, ensuring the artist's vision is preserved in future projects." This model has gained traction following high-profile catalog sales by artists like Bruce Springsteen and Bob Dylan, highlighting the enduring financial and cultural value of classic song portfolios.
Pophouse CEO Jessica Koravos expressed enthusiasm for the deal, stating the firm is "thrilled to welcome Tina Turner’s iconic catalogue to the Pophouse family." She confirmed that a series of creative initiatives aimed at celebrating Turner's music and image are underway, all intended to cement her status as the Queen of Rock 'n' Roll. Pophouse, which has aggressively grown its portfolio, also manages the rights to catalogs from artists such as Kiss, Cyndi Lauper, and the late Avicii, showcasing a clear strategy of acquiring and actively promoting major music legacies. The company is also known for creating the "ABBA Voyage" digital concert experience, demonstrating its expertise in leveraging technology to revitalize classic acts for contemporary audiences.
Alistair Norbury, BMG’s president for the UK, Continental Europe, and APAC, emphasized the shared responsibility to uphold Turner's cultural significance. "Tina Turner’s voice and spirit shaped modern music and popular culture," he said. "Our role, alongside Pophouse and the Estate, is to ensure her work continues to resonate globally while staying true to the strength and originality that defined her career." This alliance signals a coordinated plan to reintroduce Turner's influential artistry through modern avenues, which could include documentary films, theatrical productions, or immersive exhibition spaces, all conducted with a careful focus on maintaining the integrity of her original creative spirit.
