Show moreBTS’ ‘Arirang’ Nearly Doubles Harry Styles’ Opening-Day Spotify Numbers to Claim Year’s Top Streaming Bow So Far
BTS has shattered expectations with the debut of "Arirang," their first full-length studio album in six years. The project generated an astonishing 110 million global streams on Spotify in its first 24 hours, instantly claiming the title of the platform's biggest album opening for 2026. This figure more than doubles the previous year-to-date record of 63 million streams, which was held by Harry Styles's "Kiss All the Time. Disco, Occasionally." While this establishes a new high-water mark for a K-pop release, it also ranks as the 12th-largest opening day for any album in Spotify's history, positioning the group alongside the most dominant streaming artists globally.
The album's immediate chart takeover underscores its impact. As of Saturday, the "Arirang" tracklist executed a clean sweep, occupying every position from 1 through 14 on the Spotify Global Top 50. In the United States, BTS commands the top two spots with "Swim" and "Body to Body," briefly interrupted at No. 3 by Ella Langley's country single "Choosing Texas." All 14 songs from the album are clustered within the upper half of the US Top 50, appearing in the chart's top 26. This near-total saturation of major charts is a rare feat, last achieved by Taylor Swift in 2022, and signals an exceptionally powerful connection with a global audience.
To appreciate the scale of this debut, other major 2026 releases have opened to significantly lower numbers. J. Cole's "The Fall-Off" and A$AP Rocky's "Don't Be Dumb" each garnered approximately 35 million first-day streams, while Bruno Mars's "The Romantic" achieved 26.44 million and Blackpink's "Deadline" saw 16 million. With no announced projects from other pop titans imminent, industry analysts suggest BTS is poised to own the biggest release of the year's first half. Music data expert Dr. Lena Cho noted, "The 110-million benchmark sets an extraordinarily high bar. In the current climate, only a surprise release from an artist with a hyper-engaged fanbase like Taylor Swift, Drake, or Bad Bunny could potentially challenge it in the coming months."
The all-time first-day streaming record remains unshaken, held by Taylor Swift's "The Tortured Poets Department" with 314 million streams. Swift also occupies the next three positions on the historic list with "The Life of a Showgirl," "Midnights," and "1989 (Taylor's Version)." The only other artists to have posted higher first-day numbers than BTS are Bad Bunny, Drake, Playboi Carti, and Travis Scott, placing the Korean group in truly elite company. This achievement is particularly notable given that BTS is currently on a hiatus from group activities for mandatory military service, with members serving at different times since 2022, making this coordinated comeback all the more impactful.
While comprehensive figures from Billboard and Luminate—which incorporate sales and radio airplay—are still over a week away, the record-breaking Spotify debut strongly indicates "Arirang" is on track to be the definitive commercial blockbuster of early 2026. This marks a triumphant return for the group, which first made history in 2020 when "Map of the Soul: 7" became the first Korean-language album to top the US Billboard 200. The debut not only reaffirms BTS's unparalleled global influence but also demonstrates the intense, sustained loyalty of its fanbase, ARMY, whose organized streaming efforts are a well-documented force in the music industry.
