Just 48 hours after their historic OT7 reunion concert in Seoul, BTS brought their new era to American shores with an exclusive fan event in New York City. The "Spotify x BTS: Swimside" showcase, held Monday at the rooftop venue Pier 17, served as the group's first U.S. performance of material from their latest album, "Arirang," and a celebration of their full lineup's return. The event's name was a playful nod to the album track "Swim," though the weather proved ironically uncooperative for such a theme.
Despite unseasonably warm weather earlier in the weekend, Monday evening brought a sharp chill to the Seaport neighborhood. Temperatures dipped into the 30s, exacerbated by wind, light rain, and the elevated, open-air setting of the five-story pier. This created a frigid environment for the 1,000 attendees, who were selected for being among the platform's top BTS streamers in the region. Their dedication was undeniable, however, as word of the location leaked early, prompting fans to line up for hours in advance to secure a prime spot. The backdrop was spectacular, offering views of the Brooklyn Bridge, the Manhattan skyline, and the harbor with the Statue of Liberty in the distance—an intentionally iconic setting for this milestone moment.
The event commenced with a Q&A session moderated by British singer-actress Suki Waterhouse, who first gained widespread attention for her role in the "The Divergent Series" films before establishing herself as a solo musician. She fielded a mix of prepared and fan-submitted questions. Leader RM set a grateful tone, stating, "It's really an honor for us to do our first stage in America here. Thanks to Spotify for giving us this chance." When asked about the album's message for their global fanbase, the Army, RM emphasized unity: "First is that we are here—second is that we are here together. It's been four years but now we're here," he said, referencing the group's hiatus for mandatory military service—a requirement for all able-bodied South Korean men. He concluded, "We seven, and with you all, Army. We, with you, can take over the world."
The session took a lighter turn with a game based on two "Arirang" tracks, "Alien" and "Normal." The segment yielded humorous revelations, including RM teasing Jimin for chronic lateness due to "too much time on the toilet," and Suga confessing a dislike for swimming and water in general. The crowd erupted when Jimin, in response to a question about post-homecoming routines, quipped, "Typically when I get home, I'm naked." The fans' deep connection to the new music was evident during a 20-minute intermission; though "Arirang" had been released only three days prior, the entire crowd sang along word-for-word to every album track played over the speakers.
The performance itself featured a three-song set of "2.0," "Normal," and the aptly named "Swim." Throughout, the audience waved their signature Army Bomb lightsticks and held up red heart signs reading "We Stayed!"—a poignant reference to weathering both the cold and the group's years apart. This dedication was personally acknowledged by member V near the show's end, who shouted, "You stayed? Army stayed?" to massive cheers. As one industry analyst noted, "This event underscores BTS's unique symbiosis with their fans. The logistical challenge of a surprise, freezing show was irrelevant; the mere chance to witness OT7 again transformed it into a historic gathering." Exiting the venue, shivering but elated fans universally praised the intimate performance and the group's enduring cultural impact, with one succinctly capturing the collective sentiment: "I'm just happy to see them all together again."
