Show moreMiley Cyrus Is Too ‘Tired’ to Think About ‘Hannah Montana’ Reboot After 20th Anniversary Special: ‘This Has Already Been a Lot’
The premiere of the "Hannah Montana 20th Anniversary Special" turned Hollywood's iconic El Capitan Theatre into a glittering tribute on Monday, an event Miley Cyrus revealed was sparked by an offhand comment. Speaking on the red carpet, Cyrus credited a journalist, stating, "You started all this." Her remark referenced a cryptic exchange at the Palm Springs International Film Festival last January, where she hinted at plans by gesturing to her signature blonde hairstyle instead of giving a verbal confirmation.
This nostalgic celebration doubled as a cast reunion, with Cyrus joined by her mother and the special's co-executive producer, Tish Cyrus-Purcell, and sister Brandi Cyrus. Original cast members Jason Earles, Mitchel Musso, and Shanica Knowles were also in attendance, honoring the series that served as Cyrus's launchpad. Premiering in March 2006, "Hannah Montana" ran for four seasons on Disney Channel, chronicling the secret double life of ordinary teen Miley Stewart and her global pop sensation alter ego. The special, set to debut on March 24 across Disney+ and Hulu, will feature Cyrus performing classic songs and an interview with "Call Me Daddy" podcast host Alex Cooper. A notable cameo will come from Selena Gomez, who guest-starred in Season 2 as rival pop star Mikayla Skeech—a storyline that, in retrospect, created a fascinating early rivalry between two of Disney's future multi-platinum artists.
Despite the festive mood, Cyrus was clear that this is a commemorative event, not a precursor to a full revival. When questioned about a potential series reboot, she quipped, "Girl, I'm already tired. This has already been a lot." This sentiment underscores the considerable undertaking of revisiting a property that defined a generation of young viewers. Entertainment strategists note that while nostalgia drives viewership, many attempts to reboot popular 2000s-era shows have faced challenges in appealing to both original audiences and a new demographic, making a one-off special a strategically sound way to celebrate a legacy without the risks of a prolonged series.
In a shrewd behind-the-scenes move, Cyrus recently disclosed that her initial promotion for the anniversary special was a calculated fabrication, a tactic she learned from her godmother, the legendary singer and businesswoman Dolly Parton. "She told me that if you want something to happen, promote it before it exists. Then no one can say no," Cyrus explained in a recent *Variety* interview. She applied this advice by publicly advocating for a special that, at the time, lacked official approval. This maneuver highlights the sharp industry acumen Cyrus has developed since her teen idol beginnings, evolving into a producer who skillfully harnesses public anticipation to secure project greenlights. Parton, renowned for her savvy branding and ownership of her intellectual property, has long been a mentor to Cyrus, offering career guidance that clearly extends beyond music.
