Willie Nelson’s Outlaw Music Festival Returns for 2026 to a Scaled-Back 12 Cities, With Avett Brothers, Sheryl Crow, Wilco, Stephen Wilson Jr. Among Openers
The organizers of the acclaimed Outlaw Music Festival revealed on Tuesday that its 11th anniversary celebration will take place in the summer of 2026, framed as a special limited engagement. This represents a major strategic pivot from the previous year's expansive 35-city trek, with the upcoming tour visiting only approximately a dozen locations. The condensed schedule is widely interpreted as a thoughtful accommodation for the festival's legendary founder, Willie Nelson, who will celebrate his 93rd birthday during the run. Industry expert Sarah Chen of Music Tour Insights commented, "This strategy safeguards the artist's stamina while elevating each concert to a premium, exclusive event. For dedicated fans, it shifts the dynamic from a convenient tour stop to an essential pilgrimage." This model echoes the later-career touring approaches of other iconic figures, prioritizing legacy and performance quality over exhaustive travel.
While maintaining its collaborative ethos, the 2026 lineup features a rotating cast of supporting artists without a single act appearing on every date. Stephen Wilson Jr. comes the closest, scheduled for 11 of the 12 shows. The Avett Brothers are confirmed for nine performances, with Lukas Nelson—Willie's son and frontman of the band Promise of the Real—set for eight. Sheryl Crow will appear at six stops, and Wilco is booked for three. The festival will also include guest spots from artists such as Margo Price, Sierra Hull, and Robert Randolph. Notably absent is Bob Dylan, a co-headliner for the past two years; the influential singer-songwriter, whose career has spanned over six decades, simultaneously announced an extension of his own separate tour itinerary this week.
The geographically focused tour kicks off with three July dates in Willie Nelson's home state of Texas, launching on July 3rd in Irving. It includes Nelson's legendary 4th of July Picnic in Austin, a tradition dating back to 1973, which will feature special guests Billy Strings and Rodney Crowell. Following a six-week break, the tour resumes in mid-August in Maryland Heights, Missouri, for a nine-show stretch through the Midwest and Northeast, concluding on August 30th in Saratoga Springs, New York. This routing marks a significant departure from recent years, with no performances scheduled west of Texas or at iconic West Coast venues like the Hollywood Bowl, reflecting the tour's more concentrated nature.
Public ticket sales for this limited run begin this Friday exclusively through Outlawmusicfestival.com. The announcement was a joint effort from Willie Nelson, his longtime manager Mark Rothbaum, festival producer Keith Wortman of Blackbird Presents, and promotional partner Live Nation. Live Nation, the global live entertainment titan formed from the 2010 merger of Live Nation and Ticketmaster, promotes and operates venues for countless major artists worldwide. In its official statement, the festival highlighted the unique opportunity of the 2026 dates, noting that the reduced schedule imbues each performance with greater significance as a chance to witness a living legend alongside a curated mix of established icons and rising talents.
