The annual benefit gala for Music Will, the leading U.S. nonprofit focused on school-based music education, is scheduled for May 7 at the New York Marriott Marquis. This year's event will celebrate three major industry forces: legendary producer and musician T Bone Burnett, hip-hop entrepreneur and mogul Master P, and acclaimed country-pop artist Maren Morris. The program promises live performances not only from these honorees but also from students participating in the organization's own initiatives.
Funds generated will fuel Music Will's central objective: delivering modern, genre-diverse music instruction to public school students. The group has set a bold target to impact 11 million young people each year within a five-year timeframe. CEO Mike Wasserman highlighted the urgency of their mission, noting that over 1.8 million students have been served in the organization's 24-year history. "With rising rates of anxiety and isolation among youth," Wasserman stated, "music offers a vital outlet for connection and self-expression. Our progress relies entirely on the advocacy of artists and industry partners who champion this cause." This expansion is particularly critical as studies consistently link arts education with improved academic performance and social-emotional skills.
A new accolade, the Music Icon Award, will debut at the gala, presented to Bruce Eskowitz, COO of the powerhouse management firm Red Light Management. Overseeing the evening's soundtrack is musical director Michael Bearden, whose distinguished career includes collaborations with Michael Jackson and recent work orchestrating the Academy Awards ceremony. Red Light Management, founded in 1991, represents a diverse roster of artists from Dave Matthews to Lizzo, making Eskowitz's involvement a significant nod from the industry's infrastructure.
The honorees voiced robust backing for music education in exclusive comments. T Bone Burnett framed the issue historically, arguing, "Throughout history, music was a primary vehicle for teaching ethics, language, and math. Removing the arts from our schools ranks among modern America's most misguided choices." Maren Morris, whose start came through public school arts programs, shared a personal reflection. "I am a product of underfunded choir and theater programs," she said. "Well-supported school arts are community cornerstones that ignite creative futures. This recognition truly honors my younger self." Master P, a businessman and artist who founded the influential No Limit Records label in the 1990s, has long advocated for economic and educational opportunities in underserved communities.
Ticket and sponsorship information for the May 7 gala is available through Music Will's official website. The organization stresses that contributions are essential to maintaining and broadening access to music education, which it deems a fundamental component for student development and emotional health across the country.
