Show moreBruce Springsteen Performs ‘Streets of Minneapolis’ at No Kings Rally in St. Paul: ‘Your Strength and Commitment Told Us This Is Still America’
Bruce Springsteen delivered a powerful statement of unity and memory during a weekend appearance in St. Paul, Minnesota. Headlining the No Kings protest at the state capitol, the legendary rocker performed for a crowd celebrating local fortitude. His set included the protest anthem "Streets of Minneapolis," a track directly inspired by the city's recent struggles. After introductory remarks from Governor Tim Walz—which contained critiques of former President Donald Trump—Springsteen spoke to the audience. He referenced federal actions earlier in the year, stating that "federal troops brought death and terror to the streets of Minneapolis this past winter" and defiantly adding, "They picked the wrong city." He positioned the community's unwavering stance as a model of people's power for the country.
In his speech, Springsteen explicitly commended the crowd for its resilience in the face of operations by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). This agency, established under the Department of Homeland Security in 2003, has long been a focal point for debate over U.S. immigration policy. "Your strength and your commitment told us that this is still America, and this reactionary nightmare and these invasions of American cities will not stand," he proclaimed. He centered the rally's demand for accountability on remembering those who were lost, honoring "Renee Good, mother of three, brutally murdered, Alex Pretti, VA nurse, executed by ICE." His tribute served to ensure their courage and sacrifice would remain part of the national consciousness.
The performance of "Streets of Minneapolis" held particular weight, as the song is Springsteen's primary artistic reaction to the unrest. He wrote and released it swiftly in January, dedicating it to the city's residents, its immigrant population, and the memories of Pretti and Good. Explaining the song's urgent origins in a release statement, he said, "I wrote this song on Saturday, recorded it yesterday and released it to you today in response to the state terror being visited on the city of Minneapolis." A raw music video, merging footage from his home studio with scenes from the ICE protests, was promptly issued. Its debut live performance occurred at an intimate Minneapolis benefit concert the following day, highlighting his deep personal connection to the cause. This direct, rapid-response method echoes the socially conscious spirit of his iconic 1984 album "Born in the U.S.A.," which critically examined the American dream's shortcomings for the working class.
Springsteen's rally presence also strategically precedes the launch of his upcoming "Land of Hope and Dreams" tour, set to begin this Tuesday at Minneapolis' Target Center. The arena, a major downtown venue operated by the same group that runs New York's Madison Square Garden, provides a substantial stage for the tour's kickoff. The deliberate scheduling grounds the tour's commencement in the very city that fueled his latest protest music. As cultural critic Dr. Lena Shaw noted, "For Springsteen, geography is narrative. Opening the tour in Minneapolis immediately following this rally transforms the concert series from mere entertainment into a continuation of a civic dialogue on justice." This calculated move suggests the entire tour will be framed by the themes of community and social critique initiated at the capitol, potentially setting a tone for setlists and stage commentary in the cities to follow.
