BTS’ ‘Arirang’ Debuts at No. 1 on Albums Chart With Biggest Sales Week for a Group in Over a Decade

BTS has secured its seventh career number-one album on the Billboard 200 chart with "Arirang," an achievement that also marks the largest sales week for any group in more than ten years. The album debuted with 641,000 equivalent album units, a staggering sum driven primarily by traditional sales, which contributed 532,000 units. This pure sales figure represents the highest for any act since Taylor Swift's "The Life of a Showgirl" sold 3.48 million copies last year, and it eclipses the 547,000 copies One Direction sold with their 2013 album "Midnight Memories." The milestone serves as a powerful testament to the group's enduring popularity following their recent return from mandatory military service, a hiatus all seven members began in phases starting in 2022.

A major component of these sales was vinyl, with 208,000 LPs sold across 17 different collector's editions. This volume earns "Arirang" the sixth-largest vinyl sales week in the modern tracking era, a chart currently dominated by Taylor Swift, who occupies the top five spots. The group's intensely dedicated global fanbase, ARMY, played a crucial role in this success, showcasing highly coordinated support. Industry analyst Clara Shin noted, "This release transcends a simple comeback; it's a case study in modern fandom. The deliberate strategy of offering multiple vinyl variants tapped directly into collector psychology, transforming a chart debut into a widespread cultural moment."

The septet—composed of Jin, Suga, J-Hope, RM, Jimin, V, and Jung Kook—now adds to a prestigious list of chart-toppers that includes "Love Yourself: Tear" (2018), "Love Yourself: Answer" (2018), "Map of the Soul: Persona" (2019), "Map of the Soul: 7" (2020), "Be" (2020), and the 2022 anthology "Proof." To celebrate the launch, BTS performed a large-scale concert at Seoul's historic Gwanghwamun Square, a public plaza traditionally used for major national events. The performance was streamed globally on Netflix alongside a new documentary detailing the album's creation, further amplifying its reach.

The remainder of the Top 10 featured a mix of established stars and strong debuts. Country star Luke Combs landed his seventh Top 10 album as "The Way I Am" entered at No. 2, while Morgan Wallen's "I'm the Problem" held steady at No. 3. Harry Styles' "Kiss All the Time. Disco, Occasionally." and Don Toliver's "Octane" followed at No. 4 and No. 5, respectively. The chart's lower half saw Olivia Dean's "The Art of Loving" debut at No. 6, Bad Bunny's "Debí Tirar Más Fotos" at No. 7, and Bruno Mars' "The Romantic" at No. 8. Morgan Wallen's previous long-running chart leader, "One Thing at a Time," persisted at No. 9, and the "KPop Demon Hunters" soundtrack rounded out the list at No. 10.
