Show moreEmei Signs With Nice Life-Atlantic Records (EXCLUSIVE)
In a significant industry move announced Thursday, the Chinese-American musician Emei has been jointly signed by Atlantic Records and Nice Life Records. This partnership will oversee the launch of her new EP, "Night at the Opera," with its title track arriving tonight at 9 p.m. PT. The complete project is scheduled for release on June 12. The label group, a powerhouse that also manages artists like Lizzo and The Marias, is known for its artist development focus, making this a notable step for the rising star.
Emei's journey to this deal is a testament to her diverse background and entrepreneurial drive. She first captured public attention as a teenager, finishing third on "Chinese Idol" at age 15 and later competing on China's "Dancing With the Stars." These experiences were balanced by her upbringing in New Jersey and annual summers spent in China. After graduating from Yale University, she cultivated a strong digital presence; her 2022 viral TikTok single "Late to the Party" and her independently released "End of an Era" EP demonstrated her ability to connect with audiences directly. The professional turning point came when she connected with Nice Life CEO Ricky Reed, a prolific producer recognized for crafting hits for Lizzo and Camila Cabello. Following extensive discussions and his attendance at her live shows, Emei was persuaded by the label's genuine, artist-centric philosophy.
"Honestly, we were quite hesitant about signing with a major label at first," Emei confesses. She was ultimately convinced by the team's dedication, noting their consistent attendance at her performances and thoughtful input. "Their support extends across both creative and commercial aspects," she adds. Collaborating with industry veterans like Reed and songwriter Justin Tranter has accelerated her growth. "I've learned more about being an artist and understanding the business in a few months than I had in years prior," she states. Emei envisions her ideal team as a collaborative unit deeply invested in her music and community, a role she believes Nice Life and Atlantic are now filling.
Ricky Reed's enthusiasm was immediate after witnessing her commanding stage presence. "I saw her perform at a packed, energetic venue in San Francisco, and when I introduced myself, her first question was for feedback on the set," he remembers. He cites her unique combination of raw ambition, artistic vulnerability, and a fiercely independent mindset as the key reasons for the partnership. Industry observers often highlight that such alignment between an artist's vision and a label's strategy is increasingly vital. As music analyst Dr. Lena Shaw notes, "In today's fragmented market, longevity depends on authentic artist narratives paired with label infrastructure that can amplify rather than dilute that connection."
The EP's lead single, "Night at the Opera," represents a deliberate artistic full circle. Emei reveals the track was co-written with Reed around Halloween, inspired by a prior visit to New York's Metropolitan Opera. "I wanted to channel that theatrical grandeur into a modern, string-driven song that would translate powerfully in a large live setting," she explains, calling it a return to her "theater kid" origins. This major-label chapter strategically merges her cross-cultural narrative and DIY foundation, positioning Emei to expand her audience while maintaining the distinctive authenticity that has defined her career thus far.
