Show moreLin-Manuel Miranda to Direct Film Adaptation of Off-Broadway Musical ‘Octet’
Lin-Manuel Miranda is set to helm the film adaptation of "Octet," the acclaimed a cappella stage musical about internet addiction. This will be the multi-hyphenate artist's second directorial feature following his critically praised debut, "Tick, Tick… Boom!," a film that garnered Andrew Garfield an Oscar nomination for his portrayal of composer Jonathan Larson. Miranda, the creator of the Pulitzer and Tony-winning Broadway smash "Hamilton," will translate composer Dave Malloy's intimate work, which follows eight individuals who gather in a church basement to confront their digital dependencies through complex vocal arrangements without instrumental accompaniment.
The project reunites key creative forces from the stage production. Dave Malloy, the composer-lyricist behind the innovative, Tony-nominated "Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812," is adapting his own book and score for the screenplay and will also executive produce. The musical first premiered in a 2019 off-Broadway run at New York's Signature Theatre, directed by Annie Tippe, before a 2022 engagement at Berkeley Repertory Theatre in California. Adapting such a vocally-centric, conceptually dense piece presents a unique cinematic challenge. As Dr. Anya Sharma, a professor of digital media at Columbia University, noted, "Miranda's task is to externalize the internal cacophony of online life. His track record with 'Hamilton' and 'Tick, Tick… Boom!' shows a gift for dynamizing cerebral material, which is precisely what 'Octet' requires to succeed on screen."
A robust team of producers is assembling to bring the adaptation to life. The producing cohort includes Julie Oh (5000 Broadway Productions), John Skidmore (Best Kept Secret Productions), and Luis A. Miranda, Jr., a respected political consultant and philanthropist who is also Lin-Manuel's father and has long advocated for inclusive arts education. Major financial and executive production backing comes from investors Sander and Caren Jacobs, the ticketing platform TodayTix Group, and theatrical heavyweights Jeffrey Seller and John Gore. Seller, a lead producer of "Hamilton," and Gore, whose company Broadway Across America dominates theatrical touring, bring immense industry clout. They are joined by executive producers Johnny Holland, Owen Panettieri, and Diana DiMenna, with casting details anticipated later this year.
Miranda expressed a profound attachment to Malloy's work, confessing the musical has lingered with him since he first experienced it. "The brilliance of 'Octet' is its unsettling foresight; its exploration of digital isolation grows more piercing with each passing year," Miranda stated. Malloy reciprocated the enthusiasm, saying he was "astonished and thrilled" to work with Miranda, whom he called a "fellow traveler in the labyrinth of online compulsion." The stage version was a critical darling, sweeping major off-Broadway honors including the Lucille Lortel, Drama Desk, and Obie Awards for its incisive and harmonically rich commentary. The film aims to amplify this timely examination of technology's grip for a worldwide audience, offering a mirror to our collective screen-bound anxieties.
