20th Century Studios has unveiled a fresh trailer for the highly anticipated sequel, "The Devil Wears Prada 2," featuring the debut of the original song "Runway." The track, a collaboration between pop icon Lady Gaga and rising star Doechii, provides an upbeat, dance-driven soundtrack to the preview. The film will see the return of Meryl Streep as the formidable Miranda Priestly, the editor-in-chief of Runway magazine, who now grapples with the seismic shift away from print media as she struggles to adapt her empire to a digital age.
In the new storyline, Priestly finds a formidable adversary in a character played by Emily Blunt, her former assistant who has ascended to become a powerful executive at a luxury conglomerate. This dynamic sets the stage for a high-stakes conflict, as Priestly must negotiate with this new powerhouse, whose advertising budget is crucial for the survival of her publication. This plot development mirrors real-world tensions in the publishing industry, where traditional magazines increasingly rely on brand partnerships for revenue.
The musical collaboration stems from a genuine mutual admiration. In a 2023 interview with British Vogue, Lady Gaga—whose own 2019 album 'Chromatica' marked a celebrated return to dance-pop—lavished praise on Doechii. "You don’t often see someone emerge with a lyrical voice that feels instantly iconic. That’s Doechii to me," Gaga stated. "Her raw perspective and the audacious precision in her rhyme schemes resonated with me profoundly." This partnership marks another high-profile screen venture for Gaga, who filmed her cameo during breaks in her extensive 'Chromatica Ball' world tour. This sequel serves as her first major film role since "Joker: Folie à Deux," following a brief appearance in Netflix's "Wednesday."
The original 2006 film, which became a cultural touchstone, was adapted from Lauren Weisberger's 2003 roman à clef. The novel was loosely based on Weisberger's own experiences as an assistant to Vogue's legendary editor-in-chief, Anna Wintour. It followed Anne Hathaway's Andy Sachs as she navigated the cutthroat world of high fashion under Streep's merciless Miranda Priestly. The sequel aims to explore a new chapter in this world, examining how the characters have evolved alongside the industry itself. The full trailer, showcasing the new dynamic and Gaga and Doechii's track, is now available to view.
