‘Dhurandhar’ Composer Shashwat Sachdev on Building Bollywood’s Biggest Duology: ‘It Was Always One Emotional Journey, One Sonic Travel’
Show moreMeet Fifty Fifty, the K-Pop Group Behind ‘Cupid’ Who Just Covered Pink Floyd: ‘Our Music Transcends Language’
Fifty Fifty has carved a unique path in K-pop, boasting a catalog that spans a viral TikTok phenomenon and a cover of a legendary Pink Floyd track. The group, originally formed by Attrakt Entertainment in 2023, first achieved global fame with the historic success of "Cupid," which made them the fastest K-pop act to enter the Billboard Hot 100. After a lineup shift, the band reformed in 2024 around founding member Keena, now joined by Chanelle, Yewon, Athena, and Hana to create the current five-member lineup.
In a move that showcased their artistic range, the quintet recently released a somber cover of Pink Floyd's 1975 classic, "Wish You Were Here." This was part of a worldwide initiative marking the 50th anniversary of the iconic album of the same name, with distribution handled by Sony Music Korea. The accompanying performance video, shot in a desolate winter setting along Seoul's Han River, was a deliberate aesthetic choice. Member Athena told Variety that the cold, muted visuals were intended to reflect the song's themes of longing. The video garnered millions of views online prior to the official audio release, and the members expressed deep reverence for the original material when asked about their preparation.
This cover signals a deliberate, outward-looking creative philosophy for the group, one that is genre-fluid and emotionally transparent. Keena credits the global fanbase built after "Cupid" for inspiring this exploratory approach, stating a desire to experiment while maintaining their distinctive "Fifty Fifty mix." This restlessness is audible on their 2024 EP "Too Much Part 1," which presented a broader sonic palette in exploring themes of first love. The title, Keena explains, refers to an abundance of genuine emotion, a core part of their identity. Industry observers note the strategic savvy in this direction. "By pairing undeniable pop hits with curated, high-concept covers, Fifty Fifty is building artistic credibility that can outlast fleeting trends," comments music analyst Dr. Elena Park.
The group's rise coincides with the continued global ascent of Korean culture, from television to film. Member Yewon sees music as the central storytelling engine within this multimedia wave. Their primary objective is to forge a deep, wordless connection with their international fandom, Tweny, through performance. Athena emphasizes that their music is about conveying emotion and shared presence. This methodology is proving effective: following earlier hits like "Pookie" and "Rock-Paper-Scissors," their recent single "Skittlez" has entered the U.S. Mediabase Top 40 chart, demonstrating consistent cross-border appeal.
For the future, Fifty Fifty identifies collaboration and live concerts as essential for deepening their global ties. "Working with artists from various regions is a way to feel closer to fans everywhere," Yewon shared. The members unanimously agree that a world tour is the necessary next step, with one destination frequently mentioned. "Europe is a major goal, and London in particular has always been a personal dream of mine," Chanelle revealed. With their genre-defying sound and focus on raw emotional delivery, Fifty Fifty is strategically positioned to bring their unique blend to international audiences.
