YouTube Premium and YouTube Music Subscription Prices Are Going Up in the U.S.

YouTube is raising the cost of its ad-free subscription services in the United States, aligning with a broader trend of price adjustments across the streaming sector. The Google-owned platform announced increases for both YouTube Premium and YouTube Music plans. For individual users, YouTube Premium will now cost $15.99 per month, up from $13.99, while the family plan, covering up to six accounts, rises to $26.99 from $22.99. Similarly, YouTube Music's individual plan increases by one dollar to $11.99 monthly, and its family plan moves to $18.99 from $16.99.

These premium tiers offer a suite of benefits designed to enhance the user experience. YouTube Premium's central feature is the removal of advertisements from videos; it also includes background listening, offline video downloads, and full access to the YouTube Music catalog. A more limited option, YouTube Premium Lite, is also seeing a price hike, increasing from $7.99 to $8.99 per month. This plan provides ad-free video viewing but excludes music content and does not permit offline downloads or background play. Industry analyst Sarah Chen of Streamwise Insights notes, "This strategic pricing reflects YouTube's push to convert its massive free user base into paying subscribers by clearly differentiating feature sets and value propositions."

The new pricing is effective immediately for new subscribers. Existing customers will see the change applied at the start of their next billing cycle in June. According to company policy, all current subscribers will receive an email notification detailing their new rate at least 30 days in advance. In a statement, a YouTube spokesperson explained the rationale: “We’re updating the price for YouTube Premium plans in the U.S. for the first time since 2023 to continue delivering a high-quality experience that supports creators and artists on YouTube. This change allows us to maintain the features our members value most.”

This move represents the second price increase for these services in recent years. The previous adjustment occurred in July 2023, when YouTube Premium rose from $11.99 to $13.99 per month and YouTube Music increased from $9.99 to $10.99. The platform's subscription business has shown significant growth, a factor likely influencing the pricing strategy. Just one year ago, YouTube announced its combined YouTube Music and Premium service had surpassed 125 million global subscribers, a notable jump from the 100 million reported in 2024. This growth underscores the service's expanding footprint in a competitive market dominated by giants like Spotify and Apple Music.
