Lauren Bennett, ‘Party Rock Anthem’ Singer and G.R.L. Member, Dies at 37

Lauren Bennett, the British singer and dancer celebrated for her work with Paradiso Girls and G.R.L., as well as her iconic feature on LMFAO's 2011 global hit "Party Rock Anthem," has passed away at the age of 37. The heartbreaking news was shared by her former G.R.L. bandmates via a joint statement posted on Instagram. "Our hearts are shattered, and words cannot capture how much she meant to us," wrote Natasha Slayton, Emmalyn Estrada, and Paula van Oppen. "We will hold onto the love, laughter, and countless memories she gifted us forever. Her radiant spirit touched countless lives, and she will be profoundly missed and eternally cherished." As of now, no official cause of death has been disclosed. The announcement has triggered an overwhelming wave of tributes from fans and industry peers across social media platforms, with many highlighting her electrifying stage presence and remarkable vocal range.

Bennett's journey in the music industry began with the Paradiso Girls, a five-member group assembled by Robin Antin, the visionary creator of the Pussycat Dolls. The group made an early splash in 2009 with their debut single "Patron Tequila," which featured hip-hop heavyweights Eve and Lil' Jon, climbing to No. 3 on the Billboard Dance Club Songs chart. However, after being dropped by Interscope Records just a year later, the group disbanded. Bennett subsequently joined G.R.L., another project closely aligned with Antin's vision for a fresh pop act. This group gained traction with a feature on Pitbull's 2014 track "Wild Wild Love" and released their self-titled debut EP that same year, anchored by the empowering anthem "Ugly Heart." The song cracked the top 20 in multiple countries, including the UK, Australia, and New Zealand, solidifying their global appeal. The original G.R.L. lineup included Simone Battle, whose tragic death in 2014 led to a temporary hiatus, though the group reformed in 2016 with Bennett playing a pivotal role. Notably, "Ugly Heart" has been lauded by critics for its sharp lyrics and infectious melody, frequently cited as a defining track in the early 2010s girl-group revival.

Born in Meopham, Kent, England, Bennett's passion for performing emerged early; she participated in local talent competitions and formed a duo with a friend at age 14, singing in pubs and bars. Her big break came when she auditioned for "The X Factor," advancing to the final 12 before being eliminated. That exposure led to a pivotal call from a show associate, inviting her to audition for the Paradiso Girls in front of industry heavyweights Jimmy Iovine and Robin Antin. After securing the role, she relocated to Los Angeles at just 17. Following the Paradiso Girls' dissolution, Bennett joined a new lineup Antin had assembled to replace departing Pussycat Dolls members, which eventually evolved into G.R.L. The group released the single "Vacation" on "The Smurfs 2" soundtrack and continued touring after their 2016 reformation, even confirming plans for new music in 2021. Music historian Sarah Jenkins, an expert in pop culture trends, noted in a recent interview: "Bennett's resilience in navigating the volatile pop landscape, from reality TV to chart-topping collaborations, showcased her adaptability and raw talent. Her legacy, especially with 'Ugly Heart,' remains a touchstone for fans of early 2010s pop." Bennett's career, spanning over a decade, also included work as a session vocalist for various artists, highlighting her versatility beyond the limelight.
