Tom Cruise Says Taylor Swift Was ‘Schooling Me on Football’ at Chiefs Game, Calls Her a ‘Brilliant Musician and Director’

When the Kansas City Chiefs opened their 2025 campaign on Monday night, the spotlight in the stands fell on an unlikely duo: Tom Cruise and Taylor Swift, seated side by side. The pairing of the action icon and the pop titan — two figures whose professional worlds seldom overlap — set social media abuzz with speculation about their conversation. Fans got their answer just days later, when Cruise visited The Tonight Show on Thursday and told host Jimmy Fallon that Swift had effectively become his football instructor. "She was schooling me on football. For real," the actor confessed.

Their friendship, however, predates this season opener. Cruise, whose Mission: Impossible series has raked in more than $4 billion at the global box office, attended a London stop on Swift's Eras Tour in 2024. He was likewise present in July when Swift tied the knot with Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, a ceremony that united two of the most devoted fan communities in American entertainment. "First of all, she's a genius. I've been following her since she was a kid," Cruise said of the 14-time Grammy winner, adding that the newlyweds and their circle are "a beautiful couple and magical in their own right."

According to Cruise, Swift's football fluency is entirely genuine. "Oh, she knows her stuff," he remarked, recalling that the singer "knew nothing about football when she met Travis." Their chat, he added, wandered from the gridiron into "music and movies." He lauded her comedic instincts and artistic versatility: "She's funny, she's got such a great sense of humor. A brilliant writer also, by the way. A brilliant musician and director — very skilled." That last compliment is hardly idle praise. Swift has directed numerous music videos of her own and made her narrative short-film debut with 2021's All Too Well: The Short Film, featuring Sadie Sink and Dylan O'Brien. Searchlight Pictures revealed in late 2022 that she would direct her first feature — a project seemingly pushed back by the record-shattering Eras Tour, which wrapped in December 2024.

Later in the Fallon conversation, Cruise dismissed speculation that his upcoming movie Digger, helmed by Alejandro González Iñárritu — the Oscar-winning director of Birdman and The Revenant — was covertly a musical. "No, but I think it's a very good idea," he joked. "I think we should do 'Digger' the musical. Digger down!" He and Fallon then broke into an impromptu song-and-dance routine from their chairs. Cruise's promotional schedule for Digger will also feature a Friday stop on New Heights, the podcast hosted by Travis and Jason Kelce — a neat full-circle moment given his freshly minted football ties to Swift.
