Show moreDakota Johnson on Being in Taylor Swift’s ‘Patient Zero’ Music Video: ‘We Respect Each Other’s Creative Minds’
Taylor Swift has unveiled that Dakota Johnson will feature in the music video for her new song "Patient Zero," set to debut during Sunday's MTV VMAs. A 13-second sneak peek released on Thursday confirmed Johnson's appearance, sending social media into a frenzy with moody, low-lit clips that had fans buzzing. The video marks a creative collaboration between two longtime friends rather than a promotion for Johnson's upcoming film "Verity."
Speaking at the London red carpet premiere of "Verity" on Thursday, Johnson described the experience as a joyful reunion. "Working with your friends is like the most fun thing on the planet because we've known each other for so long, we respect each other's creative minds, and to be able to work alongside her and support and assist and be a person whom she tells what to do is wonderful," she said. Johnson, who first gained widespread attention through the "Fifty Shades" trilogy and is the daughter of actors Don Johnson and Melanie Griffith, elaborated further on the Fangirl Nation podcast, hosted by Ambar Lee and Leah Briars. "Taylor and I have been friends for a really long time and we're very close, and we decided to work together and it's great," Johnson said. "Normally I would say 'Don't work with your friends,' but we work really well together. It was so fun. So fun. It was the best. We just had the best time."
Their bond was on full display when Johnson attended Swift's star-studded wedding at Madison Square Garden in July. That iconic venue, which has hosted everyone from Elvis Presley to the New York Knicks, provided a fitting backdrop for the celebration. Swift initially teased the single on Tuesday before announcing "The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore" on Wednesday. This expanded edition of last year's "The Life of a Showgirl" will feature four additional tracks: "Patient Zero," "Cleveland!," "Pink Clouding" and "Babylon."
In a social media statement, Swift detailed the origins of the new material. "About a year ago, you guys did a truly unfathomable thing," she wrote. "Something that completely blew my mind… You gave 'The Life of a Showgirl' the biggest first week for an album in history. I took a trip to Sweden to celebrate with Max and Shellback, my two collaborators on this album. Really, we just wanted to reflect and take in how grateful we were for the moment we were in, but there was a studio there and we did what we do when we feel anything at all: We wrote more songs." She continued, "I hope you love them, because they were born out of pure gratitude for your exuberance for and celebration of the album we made. 'The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore' including four new songs, is out on Friday and available to preorder and save now."
Industry analyst Mark Sutherland observed that the timing of the release is no accident: "Dropping an expanded album just days before a VMAs performance is a classic Swift maneuver—it keeps her name in every headline and gives fans a reason to revisit the original record." With the "Patient Zero" video poised to premiere during the broadcast, Swifties are already scrutinizing every frame of the 13-second teaser for hidden clues, a tradition that has become as integral to Swift's releases as the music itself.
