Global Citizen Festival 2026 Canceled Due to Extreme Weather Affecting New York City

Organizers have called off the Global Citizen Festival for the first time since its inception 14 years ago, citing dangerous weather predictions for New York City. The Saturday gathering was scheduled to take place on Central Park's Great Lawn, with a bill featuring Lauryn Hill, Wyclef Jean, Lenny Kravitz, John Legend, and other prominent performers.

According to the announcement, safety concerns made the decision unavoidable. Organizers explained that the forecast pointed to conditions too hazardous for assembling tens of thousands of attendees, performers, crew members, vendors, partners, and staff on the Great Lawn, along with all the required gear. "Safety must come first," they said, noting that this was the first cancellation in the event's 14-year run. They added that the entire week had been spent searching for alternatives, but nothing panned out, and calling it off was not taken lightly. The Great Lawn, a 55-acre expanse in the heart of Manhattan, is frequently closed during storms because of safety risks. This episode echoes past weather-related disruptions in the city, including the 2012 evacuations triggered by Hurricane Sandy, underscoring how increasingly erratic climate patterns are upending major public events.

Refunds will be issued automatically to ticket holders, and those who received tickets via donations will also be compensated. Donors will learn their options through email today. In the meantime, food intended for the festival will be sent to local New York City organizations. "The Festival lasts just one day, but the actions you took and the impact you created will extend well beyond Central Park," the statement said. It also noted that conflict, extreme weather, and rising costs are pushing millions of families from their homes, disrupting education, threatening food supplies, and driving communities back into deep poverty—yet, the statement added, the event has shown what can be achieved when people act together.

The lineup also included Lainey Wilson, Shaboozey, Tomorrow X Together, Victoria Monét, Yeonjun, Yoshiki, and Alicia Keys with friends, while Hugh Jackman was set to host. Separately, the three-day All Things Go NYC Festival was cancelled just hours before gates were to open on Friday afternoon because of the severe weather battering the city. Since launching in 2012, the Global Citizen Festival has drawn major stars to Central Park to support the fight against extreme poverty, generating over $40 billion in commitments, according to organizers. Dr. Elena Martinez, an event management specialist at NYU, offered her perspective: "Cancelling is always a last resort, but with forecasts showing potential lightning and high winds, the liability is too great—organizers are prioritizing lives over logistics."
