Walker’s Rising Star Foundation Celebrates Performing Arts Students at Telluride Film Festival

At this year’s Walker’s Rising Stars Foundation Gala, held during the Telluride Film Festival and presented by Variety, talented students from across Colorado took the stage to compete for a range of scholarships. The event aims to offer both financial assistance and mentorship to emerging artists and creatives as they build their careers. By providing a platform for young performers, the foundation reinforces its commitment to nurturing the next wave of artistic talent.

Kimberly Cole, a recording artist and UCLA theater graduate, was honored with the inaugural HERO award. Reflecting on her own path, she shared, “As an artist, I faced relentless rejection and moments of self-doubt that challenged my perseverance. Walker’s Rising Stars represents my dedication to giving back—to creating an environment where young creators feel valued and supported. The arts were my refuge, a space where I found my voice. Mentoring these students is deeply personal; it’s about offering the guidance and affirmation I once needed.”

Dr. Jeff Walker, the founder, recounted the program’s origins, which began over two decades ago in St. Petersburg, Florida. High school juniors and seniors undergo multiple rounds of auditions before performing in a major showcase downtown. There, they demonstrate skills across singing, dance, theater, instrumental music, and visual arts to earn scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $10,000. According to Dr. Walker, “The foundation strives to be more than a scholarship provider—it’s about building a supportive ecosystem. Five percent of each program’s proceeds go directly toward scholarships and events, with the long-term vision of making arts education tuition-free.”

Alena Walker emphasized the transformative power of the program, noting, “I love Walker’s Rising Stars because it allows young people to be seen and celebrated. Watching students pour their hearts into their performances is inspiring—it motivates their peers, families, and the wider community. The scholarships we award don’t just reduce financial strain; they unlock opportunities and instill the courage to pursue ambitious dreams.”

Ultimately, the foundation seeks to inspire continued creativity and remove barriers for aspiring artists. Dr. Walker added, “I started this initiative because I believe education and the arts are fundamental to confidence and talent development. Too many gifted individuals abandon their aspirations due to financial limitations or a lack of recognition. Walker’s Rising Stars is built on love, diversity, and opportunity—helping young artists achieve their goals without the burden of debt.”
