Kid Rock Says Conan O’Brien’s Oscars Diss Mocking Turning Point USA’s Super Bowl Halftime Show Was ‘Not a Very Good’ Joke

Kid Rock has publicly criticized a joke made at his expense by Conan O'Brien during the 2026 Oscars opening monologue. The comedian referenced the musician's recent headline performance for Turning Point USA's alternative Super Bowl Halftime Show, quipping that an "alternate Oscars" was being hosted by Kid Rock at a local Dave & Buster's. The singer, born Robert Ritchie and known for hits like "Bawitdaba," took to social media platform X to voice his displeasure, stating he appreciates humor even when targeted but felt O'Brien's attempt fell flat.

In his post, Kid Rock pivoted to promoting his own upcoming tour, inviting fans to experience what he called "a REAL good show this spring / summer that celebrates America and 250 years of Freedom." This performance was part of Turning Point USA's All-American Halftime Show, a conservative-led program that aired in protest of the NFL's official halftime act, global reggaeton star Bad Bunny. The alternative show also featured country artists Brantley Gilbert, Gabby Barrett, and Lee Brice.

The performance itself was not without controversy, as viewers quickly accused Kid Rock of lip-syncing his signature song, "Bawitdaba," due to a noticeable audio sync issue. He vehemently denied these claims on X, attributing the problem to a post-production error by the Turning Point USA editing team. "That song is chaos," Kid Rock explained in a follow-up video, noting the track's complex, rapid-fire delivery since its 1998 release. He asserted that with more time, the technical glitch could have been corrected, and praised the organization and its production crew despite the mishap.

He further accused critics and media outlets of deliberately spreading a false narrative, a practice he claimed is common across the political spectrum. As an example, he cited similar, unfounded accusations he believed were levied against Bad Bunny following a performance on "Saturday Night Live." Media analyst Dr. Lena Shaw commented, "Technical errors in live broadcasts are not uncommon, but they often become lightning rods for broader cultural and political debates, especially when tied to polarized figures or events."

The rivalry between the two halftime shows extended to Kid Rock's appearance on Fox News' "The Ingraham Angle." There, he offered a backhanded assessment of Bad Bunny's NFL performance, stating he didn't understand it but didn't fault the artist for accepting the global platform. Instead, he placed blame on the NFL's decision-making, suggesting it forced Turning Point USA to create an alternative. "It’s just — poor kid," Kid Rock concluded, framing the Puerto Rican superstar as a victim of the league's choices rather than a direct competitor.
