Imagine Documentaries, Concord Originals Partnering on ‘Pa’l Pueblo: Fania for the People,’ Look at Salsa Music Pioneers (EXCLUSIVE)

Imagine Documentaries and Concord Originals are reuniting for a new feature-length film, "Pa’l Pueblo: Fania for the People," which will chronicle the seismic influence of Fania Records and its legendary house band, the Fania All-Stars. The documentary frames the label as the driving force behind a cultural shift that was instrumental in propelling Latin music to its current worldwide prominence. This partnership follows their previous successful collaboration on the acclaimed film "Louis Armstrong’s Black & Blues."

Director Raquel Cepeda, whose credits include Showtime’s “La Madrina: The Life of Lorine Padilla,” will guide the project. Cepeda co-founded the production company Resurgent Pictures with her late husband, Sacha Jenkins. The film promises a dynamic mix of new interviews with key Fania figures and a wealth of previously unreleased archival footage. It will meticulously chart the movement's enduring legacy, drawing direct lines to modern hits like Cardi B's "I Like It" and landmark events such as Bad Bunny's Super Bowl halftime show. The production's timing is poignant, arriving shortly after the April 2024 passing of Willie Colón, a foundational Fania artist. Colón, renowned for his pioneering trombone style and incisive lyrical commentary on social issues, helped define the label's gritty, New York-born sound, making this historical preservation effort feel particularly urgent.

The venture is a co-production between Imagine Documentaries—the nonfiction division of Ron Howard and Brian Grazer's Imagine Entertainment—and Cepeda’s Resurgent Pictures, with additional financing from Play/Action Pictures. A deep roster of producers is involved, including Sara Bernstein and Justin Wilkes from Imagine, Wesley Adams from Concord, and director Raquel Cepeda. Initial development was backed by Concord Originals, the content studio within the larger Concord music empire, which today manages the vast Fania catalog through its Craft Latino imprint.

Fania Records itself was founded in 1964 by bandleader Johnny Pacheco and lawyer Jerry Masucci. It swiftly grew from a niche independent operation into a powerhouse often dubbed the "Motown of Salsa," becoming the creative epicenter for icons like the "Queen of Salsa" Celia Cruz, the tragic genius Héctor Lavoe, and the politically-minded Rubén Blades. Their music provided a powerful soundtrack for Latino identity and diaspora experiences. In a statement, Cepeda emphasized the music's universal resonance: “I’ve seen Fania—so transcendent that understanding the lyrics isn't necessary to feel its power—celebrated across the Americas and in nations from Austria to Japan.” She contends the present cultural landscape is ideal for a thorough examination of the label's rich and often politically potent history for today's viewers.

“This is the perfect moment to honor the enduring legacy of the Fania musicians, whose work still echoes and motivates artists globally,” said Imagine Documentaries president Sara Bernstein. Concord's Wesley Adams echoed this, noting Fania's importance stretches “well beyond its iconic music” to embody a vital cultural movement about identity and communal strength. This project expands Imagine Documentaries' substantial portfolio, which includes upcoming films on composer John Williams and Whoopi Goldberg. For Concord Originals, it continues a focus on music history after the Emmy-nominated HBO series “Stax: Soulsville U.S.A.” Ultimately, the documentary seeks to do more than memorialize the past; it aims to demonstrate how the rhythms crafted in 1970s New York City continue to directly and unmistakably influence the global pop music of today.
