Woman Accused of Shooting at Rihanna’s Home Pleads Not Guilty to Attempted Murder
Ivanna Lisette Ortiz, a 35-year-old Orlando resident, has entered a plea of not guilty to multiple felony counts following a shooting at a Beverly Hills property owned by the musician Rihanna. The charges, which her lawyer formally addressed in a Los Angeles court, encompass attempted murder, ten counts of assault using a semi-automatic firearm, and three counts of discharging a weapon at an occupied home.
During the proceedings, Deputy Public Defender Derek Ray Dillman, representing Ortiz, sought a drastic reduction of her $1.9 million bail to $70,000—a motion the presiding judge rejected. Ortiz, who waived her right to a speedy preliminary hearing via video from custody, remains held without release. The incident, which took place on March 8 at approximately 1:15 p.m. Pacific Time, saw Rihanna present inside the residence but unharmed. This episode highlights an ongoing challenge for internationally renowned artists like Rihanna, whose career-defining album 'Anti' in 2016 cemented her status as a cultural icon and, consequently, a potential target for such threats.
According to investigative reports, the assailant fired roughly 20 rounds from a white Tesla sedan parked across from the estate's entrance. The gunfire damaged the property's gate and a nearby recreational vehicle, with one bullet penetrating an external wall of the main house. A swift police response led to the Tesla being located on Coldwater Canyon Drive. Ortiz was apprehended just half an hour after the initial emergency call at a shopping center in Sherman Oaks—an affluent neighborhood in Los Angeles's San Fernando Valley known for its boutique stores and high-end residential streets.
Law enforcement officials recovered an assault rifle and seven spent shell casings from the suspect's vehicle, evidence that directly informed the serious attempted murder booking. Facing a potential life sentence if convicted on all counts, Ortiz's case underscores a disturbing reality. Even within exclusive enclaves like Beverly Hills—a district synonymous with luxury estates and stringent privacy—security can be breached. As security consultant Mara Vance observed, "High-profile locations often rely on perimeter defenses, but this incident demonstrates the need for integrated threat assessment that monitors approach patterns and potential staging areas, not just the property line." Such analyses are becoming standard following events that force a reassessment of protection strategies for public figures.
