Show moreCindy Mabe, Ex-UMG Nashville Chief, Announces New Company, Joan of Arc Music, Led by Prominent Female Execs
After a fourteen-month hiatus following her departure as chair and CEO of Universal Music Nashville, industry powerhouse Cindy Mabe has re-emerged with a bold new venture. She has founded Joan of Arc Music, a multifaceted company designed to safeguard the core traditions of country music while navigating its modern evolution. Mabe, widely regarded as the most influential woman to have ascended through Nashville's major-label ranks, is launching this endeavor with a team that reflects her pioneering legacy: all five of the initially announced executives joining her are women, several of whom are fellow veterans of Universal Music Group Nashville.
The company, unveiled Tuesday morning, describes itself as "a 360 entertainment ecosystem." Its mandate spans artist development, label services, publishing, management, television and film production, next-generation technologies, and philanthropic initiatives. "Country music is at a crossroads," Mabe asserted. "We risk losing the very essence of what makes country music special – its authentic storytelling, its connection to people’s real lives, and its deep cultural roots. Joan of Arc Music exists to be warriors for creators and protect artistry." A key strategic element is a distribution partnership with Warner Music Nashville, aligning Mabe with former friendly rivals like Warner's Cris Lacy. This move provides the nascent company with major-label infrastructure while maintaining its independent vision. Mabe noted, "Cris is a Nashville veteran whose commitment to the legacy of country music aligns with our vision... Together, we’re creating a powerful platform."
Mabe's deep roots, spanning 18 years at Universal and its predecessors, saw her work with icons like Carrie Underwood, Luke Bryan, and Keith Urban. She is perhaps most frequently credited with the career-defining development and breakthrough of Chris Stapleton, whose 2015 album 'Traveller' unexpectedly swept the CMA Awards and revitalized interest in traditional country sounds. Her mission statement for Joan of Arc directly addresses her concerns about the genre's current trajectory, critiquing what she terms "coastal legitimizing." "With the rush for coastal legitimizing, the labels suggesting they know better, it often feels like the coal mines of Appalachia being strip-mined of coal all over again," she wrote. She emphasizes a duty of care, pledging that the company "will step up for our creators by providing insurance, mental health resources and wellness initiatives."
The founding executive team, listed on the company's site as "Country Music Preservationists," brings extensive experience. It includes Lori Christian, former UMG Nashville EVP of Marketing, as Head of Label Services & Management, and Dawn Gates, who oversaw digital marketing at UMG and led a TV/film production division. The structure operates through four integrated pillars: a record label, a publishing arm, a TV/film production unit, and the JOA Music Preservation Foundation. This philanthropic foundation, led by Allison Winkler, is bolstered by inaugural partnerships with the CMA Foundation, the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, and Porter’s Call, a well-known counseling service for music industry professionals. As one industry analyst observed, "Mabe is building more than a label; she's constructing a self-sustaining habitat for artists, which is a direct response to the systemic pressures she's identified." This holistic model aims to bridge heritage with innovation, positioning Joan of Arc Music as both a guardian of tradition and a catalyst for its future.
