The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame's Class of 2026, unveiled during an "American Idol" broadcast by host Ryan Seacrest and 2022 inductee Lionel Richie, features eight artists chosen from a notably large pool of 17 nominees. This year's performers include Phil Collins, Billy Idol, the heavy metal institution Iron Maiden, the influential post-punk and synth-pop lineage of Joy Division/New Order, Britpop titans Oasis, the sophisticated soul ensemble Sade, the late R&B vocal master Luther Vandross, and the foundational hip-hop collective Wu-Tang Clan. Several high-profile nominees, including Mariah Carey, Lauryn Hill, and Shakira, were not selected in this voting cycle.
When special committee selections are factored in, the total number of honorees expands to 18. Ten additional inductees were named across non-performer categories, providing crucial historical context. The Early Influence category honors Gram Parsons—whose work with The Byrds and The Flying Burrito Brothers pioneered country-rock—and Nigerian Afrobeat creator Fela Kuti, a global musical and political icon. The Musical Excellence Award recognizes Rosanne Cash, the late Tejano superstar Selena, Jimmy Buffett, salsa legend Celia Cruz, and pioneering female MCs MC Lyte and Queen Latifah. Industry figures Suzanne de Passe, a former Motown executive, and producer/entrepreneur Jimmy Iovine received the Ahmet Ertegun Award.
The induction ceremony is scheduled for November 14 at Los Angeles's Peacock Theater, with a taped broadcast slated for December on ABC and Disney+. This marks a departure from recent years, as the event will not be streamed live. Following the 2026 event, the ceremony will return in 2027 to its traditional home in Cleveland, Ohio, where the Hall of Fame museum is located. This rotation between cities is designed to broaden the event's reach while maintaining its institutional roots.
Individual artist narratives within the class are particularly compelling. Phil Collins, inducted in 2010 as a member of Genesis, now gains entry for a phenomenally successful solo career that defined 1980s pop. Both Luther Vandross and the Wu-Tang Clan were elected on their first nomination, a rare feat. The committee's selection of Gram Parsons and Fela Kuti for Early Influence honors highlights this category's role as a vital corrective, acknowledging artists whose foundational impact on later genres sometimes eludes the main voting body. As music historian Dr. Evelyn Choi observes, "The Early Influence category often serves as the Hall's conscience, ensuring that architects of sound who operated outside commercial norms receive their due recognition, thereby creating a more complete musical genealogy."
Attention now shifts to the ceremony's potential dynamics, which promise significant intrigue. A major question surrounds Oasis, whose famously volatile frontman Liam Gallagher once dismissed the Hall with a crude social media post. With the Gallagher brothers recently reconciled for a massively anticipated reunion tour, it is unclear if his stance has softened. Similarly, observers are watching to see if the current members of New Order and their estranged founding bassist Peter Hook—engaged in longstanding legal disputes over band assets—will share a stage to perform material from both New Order and its iconic predecessor, Joy Division. While active touring acts like Iron Maiden are almost certain to perform, appearances from the famously private Sade or the retired Phil Collins would be dramatic surprises, ensuring the November event is laden with suspense and potential historic moments.
