Musician David Anthony Burke, who performs under the name D4vd, is in custody facing a murder charge for the killing of Celeste Rivas Hernandez. The Los Angeles Police Department's Robbery-Homicide Division made the arrest, and Burke is currently being held without bail. Prosecutors are expected to formally file charges on Monday.
The investigation began on September 8th when police, responding to odor complaints at a Hollywood tow yard, found a dismembered body in the front trunk of an impounded Tesla. The car, registered to Burke in Hempstead, Texas, had been abandoned in the Hollywood Hills. The victim was identified as Hernandez, a Lake Elsinore resident who had been reported missing in April 2024. The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department had been leading the missing persons search since that time. The grim discovery transformed an inactive missing persons case into an active homicide investigation.
Forensic evidence and investigative work prompted the case's escalation. Authorities are now examining a trip the 21-year-old Burke took to the Santa Barbara area in spring 2025, which occurred after Hernandez's death. This scrutiny follows a shift in Burke's engagement with the probe; while his spokesperson claimed he was "fully cooperating" in September, he had stopped communicating with police by mid-November. This change in posture is often a strategic legal move. "A cessation of cooperation usually indicates the defense is battening down the hatches for trial, as plea discussions become less likely," noted a criminal law analyst.
In context, Burke's career moves following the discovery now appear significant. He quietly canceled a planned U.S. tour and delayed a deluxe edition release of his album "Petals to Thorns," which had gained traction on platforms like TikTok with hits such as "Romantic Homicide." These professional withdrawals, initially unexplained to fans, are now viewed as consequential actions taken amid a mounting criminal investigation. The LAPD's process of connecting an abandoned vehicle to a missing person and a person of interest demonstrates the meticulous timeline reconstruction required in complex cases.
The upcoming filing decision by the District Attorney will formally initiate a legal process that has already captivated public attention, bridging the worlds of online music fandom and serious criminal justice. The case underscores how digital-age celebrity offers no insulation from the most severe allegations, with the upcoming proceedings set to unravel the narrative behind the tragic death of Celeste Rivas Hernandez.
