Madonna Teams Up With Sabrina Carpenter at Coachella for Transcendent Duets: ‘Vogue,’ ‘Like a Prayer’ and New Song
Show moreOlivia Rodrigo Joins Addison Rae at Coachella for ‘Headphones On’ and Live Debut of New Single ‘Drop Dead’
As her Coachella weekend two set drew to a close, Addison Rae engaged the audience with a casual prompt, asking if they had heard any good new music lately. This perfectly set the stage for an unannounced appearance by Olivia Rodrigo, who joined Rae for an impromptu collaborative performance.
The duo first delivered a shared version of Rae's song "Headphones On," trading lyrics and blending their voices. Afterward, Rodrigo turned to the crowd to express admiration for her co-performer. Rae, in turn, humorously referenced the title of Rodrigo's latest release by exclaiming she might "drop dead." They then performed that very song live for the first time. "Drop Dead," which debuted alongside a Petra Collins-directed music video earlier that Friday, serves as the album's lead single. The visually striking video finds Rodrigo wandering the gilded halls of the Palace of Versailles—the iconic 17th-century French palace and UNESCO site that was the seat of royal power until the French Revolution—before performing with a pink electric guitar.
The single heralds Rodrigo's third studio album, "You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love," slated for a June 12th release via Geffen Records. For this project, she has again teamed up with producer Dan Nigro, her primary collaborator on both the Grammy-winning "Sour" (2021) and its follow-up "Guts" (2023). This sustained partnership points to a refined continuation of her established style, which merges pop-punk instrumentation with deeply personal songwriting. Industry observers note that such consistency in a key creative relationship is often a hallmark of an artist solidifying their artistic identity, as seen with other iconic duos like Lennon-McCartney or Eurythmics.
Adding to the album's promotional rollout, Rodrigo will take on a dual role on the May 2nd episode of "Saturday Night Live," serving as both host and musical guest. This will be her first time hosting the legendary NBC sketch comedy program, though she has performed as the musical guest twice before. Pulling double duty is a coveted slot that signals an artist's crossover appeal and confidence, typically reserved for those, like Rodrigo, who can command both the stage and the screen. Her appearance is strategically timed to maximize visibility ahead of the album's June release, leveraging SNL's unique platform to showcase her new material and comedic timing to a broad, engaged audience.
