Billy Strings Breaks Leg in Two Places While Skateboarding During Encore Break: ‘I Heard It Snap Over the Screaming Crowd!’

Bluegrass star Billy Strings has postponed the remainder of his April tour dates after sustaining a broken leg in a backstage skateboarding accident. The injury occurred this past Saturday at Charlottesville's John Paul Jones Arena during the intermission between his main set and encore. Strings, whose high-energy fusion of traditional bluegrass with psychedelic and rock influences has earned him a Grammy and a fervent following, explained in a detailed social media post that he attempted a familiar trick while "zazzed up" from the performance, resulting in the severe break.

The musician shared hospital bed photos and X-rays on Monday, revealing the surgical hardware now stabilizing his leg. "I heard it snap over the screaming crowd!! Sounded like a damn 2x4," he wrote on Instagram. He initially hoped to continue the tour while seated, inspired by Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl, who famously completed a 2015 tour from a custom throne after his own leg fracture. Grohl even reached out to offer the throne. However, after consultations with medical staff at the University of Virginia Health System—renowned for its orthopedic care—and his team, Strings conceded that proper healing was necessary. "I don't believe that I could give you guys the show you deserve coming right out of this surgery," he stated, apologizing for the disruption.

The postponed shows include his April 22 concert in Charleston, West Virginia, now moved to August 4, and his three-night run in Fisher, Indiana, originally set for April 24-26, rescheduled for August 6-8. Notably, Saturday's concert was not cut short; Strings had already performed a substantial 29-song set before the ill-fated skateboarding attempt, meaning the audience received a full show. The evening concluded with the sound of ambulance sirens rather than an encore.

This incident highlights the physical risks even off-stage performers can face, particularly those known for boundless energy. Industry experts note that while such accidents are rare, they can cause significant logistical and financial ripple effects for tours. "An artist's health is the foundation of any live run," commented a veteran tour manager. "Pushing through a major injury often leads to longer-term problems, so a cautious approach, while disappointing fans in the short term, is usually the wisest business and health decision."

Strings is expected to make a full recovery in time for his heavily booked summer and fall itinerary. His tour is slated to resume with an "Austin City Limits" taping on July 2, followed by a mix of arena, amphitheater, and theater dates through October and into December. A notable example of his rising draw is a Los Angeles stop that sees him playing the historic Orpheum Theatre on September 25 before moving to the massive Kia Forum the very next night, illustrating his rapid ascent from clubs to major venues.
