Show moreMusic Industry Moves: Miranda Lambert Joins MCA Records
Chart-topping country artist Miranda Lambert has signed a new recording agreement with the historic MCA Records, part of Universal Music Group. The deal will see her continue collaborating with Big Loud Texas, the joint venture she co-founded. Lambert, who holds a record 34 Academy of Country Music Awards—more than any other artist in the awards' history—called joining the MCA roster "a true honor," citing its legacy of supporting authentic talent. This strategic shift follows her last album release with Big Loud Records and positions her to utilize MCA's extensive catalog resources and marketing strength for future projects.
MCA President and CEO Mike Harris welcomed Lambert as a "defining voice of her generation." The announcement coincides with her receiving eight nominations for the upcoming ACM Awards, highlighting her enduring industry stature. Such label moves by established artists often signal new creative phases; for example, Johnny Cash's pivotal 'American Recordings' era began after he signed with Rick Rubin's American Recordings label in 1993, leading to a critically acclaimed series of albums that revitalized his career.
In other industry news, the independent powerhouse Concord has entered a long-term strategic alliance with Steven Victor's Victor Victor Worldwide (VVW). The New York-based label, founded in 2016, is credited with launching the career of the late Brooklyn drill pioneer Pop Smoke and also works with artist Ski Mask the Slump God. Tom Becci, CEO of Concord Label Group, stated the partnership aims to combine VVW's cultural expertise with Concord's global distribution network to cultivate new talent. Steven Victor, a veteran executive with past roles at Def Jam and Kanye West's G.O.O.D. Music, will remain at the helm of VVW. This model reflects a broader trend where large independents partner with nimble, genre-focused imprints to tap into emerging scenes.
The booming Música Mexicana genre has drawn another major investment, with Warner Music Group (WMG) taking a minority stake in the independent company TuStreams. Founded by Tony Larios in 2019, TuStreams was instrumental in the rise of the massively popular group Grupo Firme and manages a roster including artist Jorge Medina. The deal grants WMG's global network distribution rights to the TuStreams catalog, and the companies will jointly sign new acts. "This genre is demonstrating unprecedented global traction and cultural impact," said Alejandro Duque, President of Warner Music Latin America & ADA. This investment is part of a wider industry rush to secure a foothold in the genre, which has seen explosive streaming growth and crossover success, particularly in the United States.
Significant executive appointments were also announced. BMG named former Warner Music Group executive Tim Miles as Executive Vice President of its new global Sync+ division, where he will lead music placement strategy for film, TV, and brands. At Sony Music, Jen Tanner was promoted to Senior Vice President and Head of Global Brand Partnerships for the Columbia and RCA labels, following her work on successful campaigns for artists like SZA. In live production, Production Resource Group (PRG) hired Darren Pfeffer, formerly of Live Nation's Diversified Production Services, as its first Chief Commercial Officer. Pfeffer's role in driving revenue growth underscores the increasing scale and technical demands of the live events sector, where companies are competing to provide integrated solutions for major tours and festivals.
