Legendary singer Shania Twain has been named the host for the upcoming 61st Academy of Country Music Awards, marking her first time helming the ceremony. The announcement was made jointly by the Academy and Dick Clark Productions. Twain, a country-pop icon whose 1997 album 'Come On Over' is the best-selling studio album ever by a female artist, expressed her excitement about the role. "It's a true thrill to host in Las Vegas, a city that feels like a second home to me," she said. "Leading a night that honors the best in our genre is an honor, especially in a year with such strong female representation." Her comments underscore a significant trend in this year's nominations.
The 2024 nominee list is historically dominated by women, highlighting a notable industry shift. Leading the field is breakout artist Megan Moroney with nine nominations, closely followed by veteran star Miranda Lambert with eight. Ella Langley and the reigning ACM Entertainer of the Year, Lainey Wilson, each received seven nods. This stands in stark contrast to the industry's recent past; the 2010s were marked by the "Tomato-Gate" controversy, where a prominent radio consultant argued for limiting airplay for female artists, sparking a long debate about gender equity in the format. The top male nominees this year are Chris Stapleton with six nominations and Zach Top with five, while Riley Green and Cody Johnson each have four. "This ballot isn't an accident; it's a conscious celebration of the profound artistry women have contributed for decades, which fans have always embraced," observed music industry analyst Sarah Harper.
Scheduled for May 17, the awards will return to the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas after being held last year at the Ford Center in Frisco, Texas. ACM CEO Damon Whiteside emphasized the fitting nature of Twain's selection, noting her deep history with the Academy. "Having a global superstar like Shania host is a landmark moment. She is the perfect person to carry forward our tradition of iconic hosts," he stated. Twain's ACM honors include winning the Entertainer of the Year award in 2000 and receiving the prestigious ACM Poet's Award in 2023, which recognized a songwriting legacy that has influenced countless artists across musical boundaries.
Twain succeeds Reba McEntire, who hosted the previous two ceremonies and holds the record with 18 hosting appearances. The 2023 event was co-hosted by legends Dolly Parton and Garth Brooks. Continuing its move away from linear television, this year's ceremony will stream live across all time zones exclusively on Prime Video, the Amazon Music app, and Amazon Music's Twitch channel. The initial performance roster promises to blend country's heritage with its current sound, featuring announced artists and nominees like Lainey Wilson, Miranda Lambert, Kacey Musgraves, Cody Johnson, Riley Green, and the group Little Big Town, ensuring a night that connects the genre's rich history with its vibrant future.
