Psychedelic Furs Cancel Spring and Summer Tour Dates Due to ‘Serious Medical Issue’

Fans of The Psychedelic Furs will have to wait a little longer to catch live renditions of classics like "Pretty in Pink," as the band has officially called off their upcoming spring and summer tour dates. The cancellation stems from what the group describes as a "serious medical issue" involving one of its members. A representative for the iconic British post-punk outfit confirmed that "one of our band members is undergoing urgent surgery," adding that organizers are actively working to reschedule select performances where possible. The statement also reassured fans that the group is still slated to perform at the Darker Waves Festival in November, expressing gratitude for the widespread support from their audience.

In a Friday update posted to Instagram, the band issued an apology, writing, "Please accept our deepest apologies for the inconvenience. Refunds are available at point of purchase." The Furs—originally formed in London in 1977 by frontman Richard Butler and his brother, bassist Tim Butler—had been scheduled to kick off a tour in August alongside funk rock act Living Colour. That planned run was set to include stops in major cities such as New York, Chicago, Boston, and Miami. While the representative did not specify which band member requires surgery, the group is aiming to recover in time for the Nov. 15 Darker Waves festival in Huntington Beach, California, an event that will also feature Morrissey, Smashing Pumpkins, Simple Minds, and the Buzzcocks. Notably, this festival lineup underscores the enduring appeal of 1980s alternative rock, a genre The Furs helped define with their brooding, saxophone-laden sound.

The cancellations also impact a series of Midwest, Southern, and West Coast dates originally slated to begin Tuesday in Minneapolis. Those shows were scheduled to continue through Dallas, Houston, Phoenix, Las Vegas, and several Southern California venues in Rancho Mirage, Ojai, and Del Mar. The band previously faced a significant loss in 2023 with the passing of saxophonist Mars Williams at age 68, a musician whose improvisational style added a distinctive layer to their live performances. As the group navigates this latest hurdle, fans are advised to hold onto their tickets for the Darker Waves appearance, which remains confirmed for now. Industry analysts note that such medical-related cancellations are becoming more common among legacy acts, as aging musicians prioritize health over rigorous touring schedules.
