Music Industry Moves: Dawn Richard, Valerie June to Perform at Libera Indie Awards; Universal Music Expands Mental-Health Initiatives

The 2026 Libera Awards, presented by Merlin, are set to take place on Monday, June 8, at Gotham Hall in New York City—a historic venue that has hosted countless cultural gatherings since its construction in the early 1900s. The Foundation for Independent Music (FIM) and the American Association of Independent Music (A2IM) have confirmed that performers will include Dawn Richard, Valerie June, Mdou Moctar, and Porches. A highlight of the evening will be the presentation of the Lifetime Achievement Award to Terry McBride and Mark Jowett, co-founders of Nettwerk Music Group. Since launching in the 1980s, Nettwerk has been instrumental in shaping the careers of numerous influential artists, and this honor recognizes their enduring commitment to artist development and innovation within the global independent music sector. Industry analysts note that such accolades underscore the resilience of independent labels amid growing corporate consolidation, offering a counterbalance to major label dominance.

Universal Music Group (UMG) has expanded its mental health and wellness initiatives by forging new partnerships with Amber Health and Project Healthy Minds, aiming to enhance care access for its creative talent. Through this collaboration, UMG will provide mental health services to its North American artists and songwriters via Amber Health, which specializes in evidence-based care tailored to music professionals—including 24/7 clinical support, crisis intervention, and specialized referrals. Additionally, UMG is extending behavioral health support to its U.S. and Canadian employees. A key component of this strategy, launched in February 2025, is the Music Industry Mental Health Fund, developed with Music Health Alliance, which offers comprehensive mental health navigation. UMG has committed to long-term funding to ensure continuous care for individuals at all career stages. Susan Mazo, UMG's Chief Impact Officer, emphasized the company's dedication to expanding care, reducing stigma, and equipping artists, songwriters, employees, and the broader music community with necessary resources. This move reflects a growing industry focus on mental wellness, particularly after high-profile cases of artist burnout and stress have drawn public attention.

Following the merger of BMG and Concord, Björn Bauer has been appointed chief financial officer of the combined entity, effective upon transaction completion. Bauer, who will be based in Nashville, will report to CEO-designate Bob Valentine and oversee finance operations and the mergers and acquisitions team. Until the deal closes, BMG's current CFO, Mathis Wolter, will continue managing finance and integration efforts before transitioning to new roles within Bertelsmann. Concord's CFO, Kent Hoskins, will also remain in his position until closing, after which he is expected to assume another senior leadership role in the merged company. Bauer joins from RTL Group, a Bertelsmann majority-owned entertainment firm, where he served as executive director and CFO since 2019. His background includes senior leadership roles at Bertelsmann since 2007, such as executive vice president of corporate controlling and strategy. The merger, combining two of the largest independent music companies, is poised to reshape the competitive landscape, potentially creating a formidable rival to major labels in both scale and market influence.

Lauren Watkins, an artist signed to Big Loud Records and Songs & Daughters, has renewed her publishing agreement with Big Loud Publishing, coinciding with the release of her first single of 2026, "Heartbreakaholic," dropping this Friday. Watkins expressed gratitude for the partnership, recalling the immediate connection she felt with the Big Loud team during her first visit to their office five years ago. She noted their sustained encouragement had led to hundreds of songs and voiced enthusiasm for this new chapter. In a separate development, singer-songwriter Julia Wolf has signed a worldwide publishing deal with Pulse Music Group, supported by the A&R team of Michael Goldberg and Isaac Heymann at Rick Rubin’s American Songs. Wolf, who gained traction on TikTok before releasing her debut EP "Girls in Purgatory" in 2021, has since released albums like "Good Thing We Stayed" and "Pressure," and collaborated with artists such as Drake, Yeat, and John Summit. She expressed confidence about moving forward with Pulse and American, stating her belief that this partnership will enable her to produce her best work yet.

WME has hired or promoted five new agents across its offices. In London, Jana Recmanikova has joined as an agent in the Contemporary Music department, focusing on the International Festival team. The agency has also promoted Kath Butler and Giulia Spadaro to agents, specializing in international touring. Recmanikova arrives from Festival Republic, where she spent nine years, most recently as a buyer and promoter for major events like Reading & Leeds Festival, Gunnersbury Park, and Finsbury Park. Additionally, WME has hired Barbara Frum and Michelle Martinez as agents in the Contemporary Music department, with Frum based in Beverly Hills and Martinez in New York. Frum previously specialized in international touring at Outer/Most Agency, working with artists like Rhiannon Giddens and Hermanos Gutiérrez. Martinez will oversee artists such as Jai’Len Josey, Soulidified, and Oliver Malcolm, and handle college bookings across the WME roster; she previously worked as an agent at CAA. Separately, Merlin has announced senior promotions within its membership team. Jim Mahoney, who joined Merlin in 2014, has been elevated to chief membership officer, focusing on global membership strategy, engagement, and development. Bela Zecker has been promoted to senior director of global membership development, Joe Mercer Danher to director of member relations in London, and Ben Sperling to manager of global membership development.
