Nicki Minaj Reveals Why She Came Out as MAGA, Says Jay-Z Hurt Obama’s Legacy
Nicki Minaj has finally addressed the reasons behind her public endorsement of Donald Trump and the Republican Party, a political stance she had previously kept private. In a revealing interview with Time magazine, the Grammy-nominated rapper—known for global hits like "Super Bass" and "Anaconda"—explained that a series of "swatting" incidents against her home played a decisive role. Swatting involves filing false reports of violent crimes to trigger heavily armed police responses, a dangerous prank Minaj claims she endured multiple times from online trolls. She said she reached out to California Governor Gavin Newsom to request a meeting about the issue, but was ignored. "He just completely ignored me, with all the money I spent in taxes," she stated, expressing anger over what she viewed as a dismissal of her concerns as a high-profile taxpayer. This lack of engagement from state leadership, she argued, left her feeling undervalued despite her significant financial contributions. The rapper, who has sold over 100 million records worldwide, emphasized that this experience made her question whether her voice mattered in Democratic circles.
The pivotal moment arrived in 2025 when Republican Congresswoman Anna Paulina Luna proactively offered assistance, a gesture Minaj says fundamentally changed her political perspective. "I was shocked," she recalled, highlighting the stark contrast in treatment. "I’d never seen anyone in politics treat me that way. That’s what made me say that I don’t care to keep this a secret anymore." The Trinidadian-born artist admitted she initially feared that endorsing Trump would alienate her fanbase. "It’s been ingrained in everyone’s brain in the music business that we are supposed to be a Democratic family," she explained, describing an unwritten industry rule that pressures artists toward left-leaning politics. "I just knew they would not like me supporting Trump," she added, noting the cultural expectations that forced her into silence. Music industry experts observe that this tension reflects a broader trend, as artists like Kanye West and 50 Cent have also faced backlash for conservative leanings, underscoring the risky nature of such public declarations. For context, Minaj's own career has been marked by record-breaking achievements; her 2022 single "Super Freaky Girl" became the first solo female rap song to debut at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in over two decades, cementing her status as a genre-defining figure.
Minaj also pointed to her long-standing rival, Jay-Z, as a factor in her ideological shift. The Roc Nation founder, whose net worth exceeds $2.5 billion, has maintained a prominent public friendship with former President Barack Obama, from his 2021 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction by Obama to campaigning for him in 2008 and 2012. Minaj claimed this relationship may have backfired politically. "I think Jay-Z ended up costing Obama a lot, whether he knows it or not," she said. "Lots of rappers don’t like Jay-Z and were afraid to say it." She also cited a 2024 speech where Obama urged Black men to support Kamala Harris's presidential bid as a turning point. "I just saw so many videos of Black men saying that they didn’t like the way they felt about that speech that Obama gave," Minaj recalled. "They felt like they weren’t being listened to." This perceived disconnect, she argued, further pushed her away from the Democratic Party, reinforcing her decision to publicly embrace the Republican platform. Political analysts note that while celebrity endorsements can sway niche audiences, their overall impact on voter behavior remains debated. For example, a 2023 study by the Pew Research Center found that only 14% of voters said a celebrity endorsement influenced their vote, suggesting Minaj's shift may resonate more with her dedicated fanbase than the broader electorate.
