Mick Jagger Set to Star in Alice Rohrwacher’s ‘Three Incestuous Sisters’ Joining Josh O’Connor, Dakota Johnson, Saoirse Ronan, Jessie Buckley, Isabella Rossellini

Legendary Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger has joined the cast of "Three Incestuous Sisters," the upcoming film adaptation of Audrey Niffenegger's gothic illustrated novel. The project, directed by acclaimed Italian filmmaker Alice Rohrwacher, marks her first venture into English-language cinema. Jagger will appear alongside previously announced stars Dakota Johnson, Josh O'Connor, Saoirse Ronan, Jessie Buckley, and Isabella Rossellini. Filming is currently underway on the dramatic volcanic island of Stromboli, located off Sicily's northern coast. A source confirmed reports from local Italian media that Jagger arrived by helicopter earlier this week. He is reportedly staying in a villa with deep cinematic history: it was on this very island that Roberto Rossellini, Isabella Rossellini's father, began his notorious affair with Ingrid Bergman, her mother, while shooting his 1949 film "Stromboli." This location choice adds a layer of meta-narrative to a production already steeped in artistic lineage.

For Rohrwacher, a two-time Cannes Film Festival prize winner known for "The Wonders" (2014) and "Happy as Lazzaro" (2018), this film represents a significant career step. Her signature style, which blends Italian neorealism with elements of magical realism, has earned her a reputation as one of Europe's most distinctive cinematic voices. Earlier this year, she received the European Film Academy's Achievement in World Cinema Award. The adaptation follows Niffenegger's eerie story of three sisters living in isolation, whose lives are disrupted by the arrival of a lighthouse keeper's son. While official plot details remain under wraps, unconfirmed Italian press reports suggest Jagger will play the lighthouse keeper, with O'Connor portraying his son. Jagger's acting career, though intermittent, includes notable roles. He made a striking debut in Donald Cammell and Nicolas Roeg's cult classic "Performance" (1970), playing a decadent rock star. Other credits include a ruthless corporate mercenary in the 1992 sci-fi film "Freejack," a drag queen in Sean Mathias's 2015 drama "Bent," a jaded escort agency executive in "The Man From Elysian Fields" (2001), and a reclusive art collector in Giuseppe Capotondi's 2019 noir "The Burnt Orange Heresy," which premiered at the Venice Film Festival.

Adding context to Jagger's involvement, The Rolling Stones recently announced a new studio album titled "Foreign Tongues," scheduled for release on July 10 via Capitol Records. The 14-track collection arrives less than three years after their Grammy-winning "Hackney Diamonds," which was the band's first album of original material in nearly 15 years. The lead single, "In the Stars," was released digitally on Friday, May 5, alongside the opening track "Rough and Twisted." Rohrwacher's most recent feature, "La Chimera" (2023), which starred O'Connor and Rossellini, competed for the Palme d'Or at Cannes and was released in the U.S. by Neon. The film received widespread praise for its atmospheric storytelling and visual beauty. "Three Incestuous Sisters" is financed and produced by Indian Paintbrush, with Johnson and Ro Donnelly producing for Johnson's TeaTime Pictures, alongside Steven Rales for Indian Paintbrush. Rohrwacher is also serving as a producer, with Fandango handling Italian line production. Principal photography began in April, with a planned ten weeks of shooting scheduled on Stromboli and in Rome.
